This was not what she wanted. And if he wasn't going to take them, then the foxes would have to. Although she didn't want to admit it, Vixenleap was already well-practiced in this art, after her accident with WindClan's Thornstep that resulted in Fogpaw and Acornpaw. Unfortunately, neither WindClan nor the wolves had gotten to them first. Fortunately, ThunderClan didn't question its warriors and instead a queen happily took them in to rear them as her own. For moons, she'd innocently flirted with warriors at the border, with nothing ever coming to fruition. It was always just a game to her- until, those accidents. Lightning never struck twice. ...except for this time. She didn't want these half-breed rats. Hell, she didn't want kittens in general- they were a hindrance, and if they didn't carry ThunderClan blood, they were worthless. She was a hard-headed warrior and not one of those googly-eyed queens who fawned over their mates and relished in the fact that they got to lay around and do nothing productive. Vixenleap didn't settle. The only tom that she felt particularly close to was Lynxstar, and that...that was a different story. He was just her scratching post, really. A scratching post who was kinda sorta hot at the same time. The lean she-cat, with her scent marred by the overpowering smell of charcoal, slowly wormed her way into the ShadowClan territory. The kittens were a pain, but fortunately they were fresh and weren't too big to be bothersome. However, just being with them- it was humiliating. This wasn't the life she wanted. She didn't want to be stereotyped as a queen when she was a warrior. One of ThunderClan's best, too. Vixenleap swore by it. Vixenleap had found a hollowed out, charred log to temporarily hide herself and the kittens in. She stuffed the small furballs against her own ruddy pelt, so as to keep them quiet and calm as she waited. Their lives were in the paws of Crowleap's. Live or die, the warrior had no attachment to the creatures of her own blood. She breathed strictly for ThunderClan, and these half-breeds were of no use to them. Not when they had limited prey- they couldn't afford more mouths to feed. And she couldn't afford to tarnish her own reputation. He better hurry up and patrol in this area. The impatient she-cat held her breath. ...If he doesn't appear soon, I'm just going to dump them. Leave them here. Some ShadowClanner will find them eventually.

Leaving camp alone proved much more difficult than he'd thought. If it was Silentsmoke, he wouldn't mind as much, but he was itching to get out of the camp. He hadn't visited the Thunderclan border since the fire, and he wanted to at least see how bad the damage was. After successfully avoiding being drug into yet another unwanted discussion, he slid out of camp, a sigh of relief escaping him. After surveying the area and making sure he would be alone, he began to trot to the Thunderclan border, a sense of dread washing over him. As he trotted along, his mind wandered. To his clan. To his friends. To Silentsmoke. His heart skipped a beat at the mere thought of the tom. The warrior always seemed to be on his mind one way or another, often distracting him. Not that he minded, of course. He had...feelings. And he was unfamiliar with them; of course, he's had crushes before, but never this intense. Crowleap couldn't even tell if the warrior felt the same; his feelings always guarded, words chosen carefully. They were supposed to be just friends. Just friends, to make Quietstorm jealous. But that backfired in more ways than one. Starclan, help me... He thought, shaking his head with a small smile. It hurt him to think that they were just friends. He wanted to be so much more than that, but how would he even show it? When would he show it? What if Silentsmoke rejected him? It seemed like he did enjoy Crowleap's company at times, but he could just be pretending. Right? The deputy crawled over a log, ears perking as he neared the border. A quick sniff of the air made him tense; Thunderclan on Shadowclan territory. But the scent was...familiar, yet he couldn't place it. He'd turn around, eyes scanning the area. "Hello...?" He'd say, voice filled with confusion. 20mia08

"StarClan, I thought you'd never show." The russet warrior grumbled after recognizing the voice of ShadowClan's deputy with a bitter twitch of one of her ears. She recalled their evening together, with their innocent flirtations and brief yet seemingly harmless evening together. Vixenleap thought she wouldn't make the mistake again- the next time she had a border encounter, it wouldn't happen again. She'd make sure of it. The confident ThunderClan warrior dragged her compact form out of the log, dragging the three furballs along with her. And so there she sat, glaring at Crowleap before ruffling her fur in a disdainful fashion. "Nothing was supposed to become of this." She commented dryly before motioning to the three tiny kits before her, eyes still closed and ears but tiny specks on their round heads. "Look- we had fun, but I don't want kits. I'm a warrior- I'm not a queen. You need to take these...creatures and speak nothing of our night together. Otherwise...they'll just stay here, at the border. And wait for something else to take them." It was a heartless statement, but Vixenleap felt no maternal love towards the kittens. They weren't really hers, they weren't meant to be created. Anything that lacked pure and pristine ThunderClan blood was worthless. She pushed them forward- a tom and two mollies, with the former holding the strongest resemblance towards the fox-colored ThunderClanner only at his legs and face. Nonetheless, ShadowClan had to have its fair share of cats with at least the faintest traces of red on their cats- tortoiseshells seemed to be a common occurrence, anyways. Although, the only tom...well, he was a bit of a surprise. He was creamy-white, save for his red extremities, and so he really didn't pass for neither hers nor Crowleap's. That one would really keep ShadowClan guessing. "ThunderClan needs to cut its losses. Three kittens, no matter how small, are too much for us to feed at the moment...your warriors made sure of that." Vixenleap continued to stare at the tall smoky tom, expecting him to step forward and take the kittens from her paws. She wanted to get out of ShadowClan land as soon as possible, for their stench among the charcoaled plains made her feel as if she was suffocating. That, and she didn't want anyone to catch her with those three tiny hairballs. "I'm no parent, anyways. You seem like you'd be better at raising them with like...love, or whatever it is they need."simonwho

His green eyes widened as Vixenleap emerged, ears flattening as she revealed...kits? What? His head tilted in confusion, eyes darting between the warrior and kits, almost not wanting to believe they were his. They didn't look much like him; but they didn't look much like Vixenleap either, further confusing him. Were they...? Was he...a father? He almost didn't hear her as panic coursed through his veins. "I...What?" The deputy, for once, was at a lack of words. With careful steps, he approached the warrior and kits, leaning down to sniff at them. His ears perked up as Vixenleap spoke again. The thought of his kits, abandoned at the border, waiting for some predator to find them forced him to make up his mind. He couldn't just leave them out there. Not to mention he'd always wanted kits, and this was the perfect opportunity. "I'll take them. They'll never know they are half-clan, and of course they'll never know you." The deputy replied, picking up the kittens as best he could. He'd set them down again at his paws, glancing at Vixenleap. "I won't speak of our night together to any other cat; I expect you'll do the same." He'd pick them up again, turning away from the Thunderclan warrior and making his way back to camp. He wasn't sure how he'd explain them, but he was more than willing to take care of them himself. Maybe Silentsmoke would...No, surely not. The smoky feline pushed the worst of the negative thoughts out of his head, instead focusing on the three kits he now had. His biggest worry now were suspicions that would be raised. He couldn't exactly say he was the real father of the kits, could he? And he wasn't even sure if any of the current queens would even be willing to take them in while they were still nursing. The only thing he knew for sure was that he already loved them. 20mia08

Huh. She wasn't expecting it to be so easy to force the newborn litter onto Crowleap, given they were half-breeds and he was a high-standing cat in his clan. Then again, what would he care if they were half-clan? Nobody would know, nobody outside of the two of them. His surprised disposition at first wasn't be promising, as she recalled him being smooth with words and nothing at all like this confused cat before her. However, he seemed to take it in stride. Her unintentional offspring would be in good paws after all, if only she actually cared. With an absentminded angling of her ears towards the border, Vixenleap had already begun to step back towards ThunderClan once he had pulled the kittens towards him. Good, it was done then. She was free, and he was now a father. He seemed to be ok with parenthood, at least- she could tell by the way that he looked at the kittens that he truly cared for them. Vixenleap could never give them that love. When she glimpsed down at them upon their arrival, she felt like a void of emotion until the strong sense of distaste settled in. "Good." The russet feline said simply. "I have no attachment to them. ThunderClan will know neither of you nor the...product. As it should be."Despite her patriotic attitude towards her clan, the warrior had a bad habit of breaking the code. She always had an eye for attractive toms, especially those capable of being as equally charismatic as she. Mollies? She despised them- Vixenleap did not know why, only that they made her fur stand on end and her blood boil. It was simply engrained in her. "They don't have names. I'm assuming they're fire elements- I am myself, so ShadowClan should have no suspicion towards them whatsoever, save for their unusual coloration and lack of a mother."The lean molly continued to make her way towards the border, offering Crowleap a small flick of her thin tail. "Take care, handsome. It was fun...while it lasted."simonwho

The only reply he gave was a small nod to the she-cat before he parted ways with her. He decided to take the long way back to camp; he had to think of what to say to his clan. To Silentsmoke. What WOULD he say to the tom? Hey, I found these kits on the Thunderclan border with no other cats scent around, I'm adopting them? He almost didn't want to return to camp, but of course, he had to. He had a duty to his clan, and now to his kits. Speaking of them, he had to think of names. The deputy slowed to a walk, names running through his mind. Of course, he wanted to name one Smokekit. Not because he was head over paws for Silentsmoke, but because he was head over paws for Silentsmoke, and mostly because her fur was dull and gray-ish, with light orange dotting her pelt as well. Specklekit, for the other female. It was a cute name, he thought. And it fit, as orange was speckled in stark contrast across her dark fur. As for the cream coated tom, he was at a loss. Perhaps his friend would have an idea for a name? He'd have to wait and see, though. But he didn't wait for very long. The deputy turned a corner, almost running head first into Silentsmoke. He froze, eyes wide, ears pinned back, fur puffed up. He wasn't supposed to be here. Crowleap wasn't ready to face his own clan, let alone the only cat he considered his closest friend. 20mia08

Silentsmoke had seen Crowleap leave camp, and had told himself he wouldn't follow. "Clingy" wasn't in his nature, at least he thought it never had been. However, he wasn't happy with Crowleap having deputy duties and what have you, leaving him less time to spend in the presence of Silentsmoke. But what was he so upset about? It had just been business, and...well, it had become personal. Like a jealous wife, he instantly grew suspicious and then upset that the smoky tom hadn't invited him along on the stroll. He had his pride, so he couldn't go and make some public outburst about it and seem like some oversized kitten, throwing a hissy fit because Crowleap didn't want to hang out with him. Like the mature cat he was, Silentsmoke was going to directly confront the tom about it. Maybe he wouldn't admit that he had feelings- well...did he? The silky-furred tom blinked in surprise when he rounded the corner and was face-to-face with Crowleap, whose mouth was stuffed with three very fresh kittens. He couldn't find the words at first as shock settled in, followed by a horrible number of assumptions. Was...he sneaking off to see someone else? At first, Silentsmoke found himself overwhelmed with rage. First Quietstorm had betrayed him, and now his "hired" friend? But looking closer, the kittens didn't seem to resemble Crowleap what-so-ever- hell, one of them didn't look like any of the ShadowClan cats Silentsmoke knew. Still, he struggled to find something to say. The warrior narrowed his eyes. "...I didn't know you were pregnant." He half-joked, trying to swallow the sensation of envy he felt. Crowleap could only stare at Silentsmoke. Anxiety and fear swirled within him, and he'd be shaking if he weren't holding his kits. Did...Silentsmoke look hurt, or was that his eyes tricking him? Clearing his throat, he gently set the kits down at his paws, taking quite the interest in the trees surrounding them. He didn't want to lie to him; he really didn't. But he didn't have a choice, did he? He was already going to lie to his clan. Would it even matter to Silentsmoke? Would they even be friends after this? Were they even friends? He didn't know anymore. "I....I found them at the Thunderclan border. They didn't have any other scents; no other cats had been around for a while. So...I assumed they were abandoned and...I thought we could- I mean, I could adopt them." He spoke, forcing himself to calm down. His heart hurt knowing he had to lie to the one cat he cared about most in his clan. But he was deputy, and a proud Shadowclan warrior. No one ever had to know their real mother. They'd be raised as Shadowclanners. Crowleap glanced down as the kits moved, leaning down to gently nuzzle them. They provided little comfort, but it was comfort nonetheless. 20mia08

His eyes glided from the kits, to Crowleap, to the kits, and then back to the tom once more. He took note of how his friend refused to make eye contact, looking off to the trees like they were the most interesting thing in the territory at the moment. Nope- Silentsmoke wasn't going to let him get out of this, not without answering his questions. He had no way of knowing if the tom was being entirely honest with him or not, he could only take his word for it and pray that his answers were not false. Crowleap wouldn't intentionally lie to him- right? Yeah, they were supposed to be fake friends, but... What kind of mess have I gotten myself into? It wasn't supposed to be this way- it was all meant to be pretend, a game to fool Quietstorm and make her jealous. He was just intending on getting his sister back, and instead, he found himself following around the clan's deputy like he was the tall tom's shadow. The slick-furred feline continued to stare at Crowleap after he spoke, processing his words and deciding if he believed them or not. While he was a good and mature warrior, he wasn't exactly the brightest in the clan. Nonetheless, he could still make sense of things, and it seemed reasonable of ThunderClan to dump the kittens. They were more mouths to feed, and the clan wasn't able to provide after his sister's travesties. Looking now at Crowleap, nuzzling the kits, he couldn't exactly say "no". Damnit. It was clear that the deputy was already in love with the little tykes, despite having just happened across them. Silentsmoke twitched an ear fondly as he delved into his thoughts, recalling a single word in which Crowleap had stumbled over: we. Although the deputy didn't seem to want to openly admit it, it would appear that he wanted to raise them alongside his fake friend. It was...touching. He shook his head slowly. Life was a mess, wasn't it? He removed his golden gaze from the smoky feline to glimpse around the forest, as if trying to ensure that nobody else was around. "...Look, Crowleap. I can't go on pretending anymore."simonwho

The silence between the pair was deafening. He prayed that the warrior would say something. Anything. Well, not that. His heart felt as if it stopped, fear crawling through his veins like ice. He can't keep pretending...? That they were friends? Had he messed up? He definitely messed up. There was no way Silentsmoke would want to be his friend - fake or otherwise - when he had kits. With that realization, his heart broke. If cats could cry, he'd be literally crying a river, right then and there. But he knew this was coming, right? He had even told himself he'd be ready for it. He wasn't, of course. He took in a breath, letting it out slowly. "Yeah, I....Expected that. Uhm. I need to tell you something before we part ways though, Silentsmoke." Crowleap was terrified; he was sure that Silentsmoke would hate him after this. But that was okay. At least he'd know. With one last glance at the kits, the deputy stood up straight, locking his eyes - or, rather, attempting to, as Silentsmoke was looking around. He was shaking. "I...Like you. As more than a friend. Obviously." He cleared his throat, dipping his head. "I was...I had a plan for this...No I didn't. I wasn't ever gonna mention it. I didn't... I didn't want our friendship to end, even if it was...fake."

He didn't let him finish. Rude. Fortunately, nobody was around. Nobody had to witness this awkward moment of weakness, save for the two of them and the bundle of three clueless kittens. He listened curiously as Crowleap awkwardly mentioned parting ways, blinking in confusion because he had no plans on "parting ways"- no, he was going to march the deputy back to camp himself. He didn't want to let the tom out of his sight, now that he randomly showed up with a trio of newborns. If he wasn't careful...Crowleap would come back with five more the next patrol, and then seven, and then twenty. "We aren't parting ways." He added stubbornly, sitting down crossly to make it clear that he wasn't going anywhere anytime soon. "You can't carry those little guys yourself, anyways. You might drop one."...Wait- when did he care about them? Silentsmoke perked his ears when the deputy finally spilled the beans and confessed his feelings. "You didn't let me finish." The dark warrior pointed out when Crowleap finished and began to awkwardly run on about his plans and what not. "I don't want to pretend to be your friend anymore because..." He bit his lip, allowing his vision to break away from the smoky cat before him and glimpse around once more, to confirm that they were alone. He noticed nothing but burnt trees and fleeing songbirds. "I don't think of you as a friend anymore, alright? It isn't fake anymore, and I can't just force myself to fake it like I've been trying to. You're more than a friend. I like like you, ok?" He was tense as he spoke- such emotional conversations made him feel vulnerable, and consequently his ego felt deflated. But it was true, and now Crowleap knew it. "...Besides, you can't raise these kits by yourself. They need two parents and I, uh...need to make sure you don't sit on them by accident, or something." He tried to justify himself, for the sake of his pride, but it was pointless. He loved the dork standing before him. His plans had backfired, or at least they turned into something completely unexpected: a partnership, not a friendship. A partnership. He squinted down at the kittens. "Do they have names yet?" What kind of stupid question was that? Of course they did- Crowleap was clearly attached already. He had to have named them. simonwho

They weren't parting ways? What? But he said...Oh. OH. His ears flattened in embarrassment, eyes darting away from the warrior. At the mention of his possibly dropping a kit, he tensed. He wasn't that clumsy, was he? And just like that, his heart was stitched back together. Like it hadn't even broken, actually. His pain was quickly replaced with excitement, happiness, and - dare he say it - love. He resisted the urge to rush forward and shower the tom with all the affection he's been holding back, but he refrained. He smiled, glancing down at the kits. He thanked Starclan that he wouldn't have to raise them alone. "You mean it? Like, really mean it?" He felt like a young warrior, getting all giddy over this. "Yeah. Well, two of them...Smokekit, and Specklekit. I couldn't think of what to name the tom." He said, gesturing at the respective kits with a paw. "Do...do you want to name him?" Crowleap was only slightly embarrassed that he could only come up with two names, but he was sure they fit. 20mia08

Silentsmoke seemed to regard the little kits as delicate eggs, watching Crowleap's every movement to ensure that he didn't trample them or prod them too hard with his paw. He'd never been around little ones- it wasn't often that ShadowClan had kittens in the nursery, and with recent tensions around ThunderClan, it wasn't something he thought about often. Parenting wasn't his number one skill. He'd be new to this, and he wanted to make sure he got everything right. He blinked at the clan deputy when he questioned his affections. "Of course I mean it."Once more he glimpsed down at the kittens. By the differences in size, he assumed that there were two females and one male- but that was also taking their coat colors into consideration as well. He'd never seen a male calico or tortoiseshell. The stone-faced warrior smiled lightly at the names of the kittens. "Specklekit" was very fitting of the little mottled tortoiseshell. However, he paused in his place when Crowleap mentioned the name "Smokekit". Hm. Cute. "...'Smokekit'," he commented slyly, "how'd you come up with that?" The tom focused his attention on the final kitten, the one that appeared to be the only male of the litter. What more, he was certainly the oddball of the trio, with his pale coloration and fire-colored points. Silentsmoke felt his heart drop for a moment, reminding himself that the tiny creature wouldn't fare well with ShadowClan hunting, at least not traditionally. He'd stick out like a sore thumb amongst the dark-coated warriors for sure, but Silentsmoke would still support him. And beat the snot out of anyone who dared to mock the kitten. He thought on names. Snowkit? No- too generic. Pebblekit? No...didn't suit him. He continued to think on it, glancing down at the kits and listening quietly to their strange kit noises. "Sneezekit." He decided suddenly. It sounded cute. He liked it. simonwho

"I'm glad." Crowleap stated, purring softly. Every worry he once had melted away. His kits now had two parents, and while he'd never let it be known, he was thankful that Vixenleap had been their mother. It gave him the opportunity to be a father, and admit his feeling to the warrior. Which he originally was never going to do despite his romantic nature. At the question of the kits name, Crowleap looked away sheepishly. "Uh...Y'know..." His voice trailed off, watching Silentsmoke as he observed the final kit. The tiny tom was an odd one; he didn't even look like he could be a product from Crowleap. He almost squealed at the name Silentsmoke came up with. It was adorable; and seemed to fit the tom perfectly. The deputy couldn't be happier with the turnout of this day; He had been so worried and scared, and now he was at peak happiness. "We should probably take them home now..." He'd say, experimentally touching his nose to Silentsmoke's. "They're probably hungry."20mia08

He didn't want to verbally acknowledge it, but Silentsmoke was flattered that Crowleap had immediately named a kitten after him. Of course, they lacked any form of resemblance to Silentsmoke, but he was honored to have the little gray furball named after him regardless. Even if Crowleap didn't directly claim that the kitten's named was pulled from the black tom's suffix. He gingerly circled around the small trio after he formally named the only tom of the litter. The deputy didn't voice his approval for Sneezekit's name, but Silentsmoke did not need that- he could tell by the excited gleam in the smoke's eyes that he adored the name. It brought a small smile to the dark tom. Crowleap decided that it was time to return to camp to feed the kittens. For whatever reason, Silentsmoke found it difficult to remove his eyes from the three helpless bundles of fur. He'd protect them with his life. He told himself that he wouldn't fall for those cute little antics, but...well, he was a sucker. He fell for it. However, he found himself flinching in surprise at the sudden touch of Crowleap's warm nose against his. He felt hot underneath his fur. Normally he'd tell anyone who got close to him to buggar off, but Crowleap...he was an exception. Silentsmoke responded in a quiet purr, despite attempting to hold it back. He couldn't resist. Silentsmoke carefully lowered his head to gentle pick up one of the kittens by the scruff. "Whatever mom feeds them...she better take good care of them. Perfect care. I'll make sure of it."simonwho
