Shadowcat Spiderface looked down at the herbs he had collected and began to straighten a few of them up in a perfect line, nodding in satisfaction as he had done so, content with how he had everything gathered before him on the ground. It was time for the apprentices to learn what herbs were safe and which ones were deadly. He had only gathered a few basic common herbs most everyone knew of, but Ravenstar had been getting quite anxious lately, so he had taken it upon himself to teach the apprentices on what they would need to know when they became warriors, if the time came where Darkclan and Thunderclan were at war. But since the other apprentices were either missing, or out on patrol with their mentors, the only apprentice he had in the medicine den with was Featherpaw. He quite enjoyed her presence, she was much quieter than the other apprentices and was dedicated to her training as well. She would make a fantastic warrior. It was a shame her mentor had gone missing. When finished straightening up his herbs for the umpteenth time, he turned to the apprentice. "Today, you will learn the basic functions of herbs and how to use them. Ravenstar has tasked me with teaching you since you mentor is... unable to." he said, looking to the side awkwardly. He cleared his throat and looked at the apprentice again. "Are you ready to begin?"

Featherpaw shifted slightly in her sitting position, the musty scent of herbs filled the den in which she was waiting. The medicine cat, Spiderface, was sorting through an assortment of herbs, the gray tom's movements were graceful and calculated. Showing professionalism in his work, her sharp yellow eyes were watching his every move. Sometimes the medicine cat felt intimidating, but still comfortable to be around. She sat quietly, waiting patiently for him to finish and begin the lesson. Spiderface had a slight look of satisfaction on his face as he turned towards her, Featherpaw listened to him attentively as he explained what she would be learning and how Ravenstar had wanted him to teach her since her mentor couldn't. She flinched slightly at the mention of her mentor, they had been among that cats that had gone missing on that fateful day in which a bright flash had lit up the skies. She still felt deeply unsettled and could tell that the medicine cat was uncomfortable with talking about it. Featherpaw nodded confidently when he asked if she was ready, she wanted to still be useful to the clan that had taken her in and become a respected warrior.

ShadowcatSpiderface gave Featherpaw a nod and began to push them towards the light gray apprentice. He lightly dipped a paw around a small cobweb and held it up to the light, making sure the apprentice saw. "This," he started, "As you may already know, is a cobweb. It is used to dress wounds and soak up blood but you can also use it to clean a wound." He put the cobweb down and got to his paws, quickly excusing himself as he went to grab a piece of freshkill, laying it on its side and exposing a large wound on the side its chest. "Here is how you apply it." He wrapped the cobweb around his paw again and took it to his muzzle, straightening out the wrinkles and folds it had gotten when he laid it down. "You can't just drop a piece of cobweb on a wound, you have to make sure it's straight and that it has no spiders, dirt or leaves in it. You have to gently lay it over the wound and make you cover it fully. If you can't find a large enough piece of cobweb, then spread the the piece you already have as wide as you can without tearing it and make sure that no part of the cobweb gets inside the wound. Cobweb may be strong, but it's still delicate, so you have to be careful when dealing with it." He laid the cobweb on the ground in front of Featherpaw, and pushed the freshkill towards her. "Now, pretend that this freshkill is one of your clanmates. See if you can dress their wound like I showed you," Spiderface said, looking at the apprentice expectantly.

Featherpaw watched carefully as Spiderface explained how to apply the cobwebs, paying careful attention so she would not miss anything. As the dark-gray tom carefully straightened out the piece of cobweb and placed it beside the fresh-kill that he had fetched. Listening to his instructions closely, the small gray apprentice nodded and began. She could feel the medicine cat's gaze on her as she gently picked up the cobweb with her paw, she brought it closer to her muzzle and inspected the silky tendrils. Determined to do it correctly, she narrowed her yellow eyes and delicately straightened out the cobweb, making sure that nothing had gotten tangled in the sticky web. Once straightened, she leaned over the piece of fresh-kill and found where the wound on its chest was. Now moving with a sense of efficiency and tenderness, Featherpaw placed the cobweb onto the deep gash. She made sure it would stick to the body and not fall off, making sure to be as gentle as if it was a clanmate she was tending to. Sitting back, she looked up at the gray medicine cat expectantly, wanting to know if she had done well. Her ears twitched nervously as she met Spiderface's gaze, not wanting to have disappointed him. ShadowcatSpiderface watched carefully as Featherpaw applied the cobweb to the freshkill, moving with the grace and and tenderness that he had taught her. He looked over her work when she finished and nodded in satisfaction, allowing a small smile to slip onto his face for a heartbeat before it dropped off again. "Very good," he said, pulling the cobweb off of the prey and setting it aside. He turned around and grabbed a stalk of thin weeds from his little line of herbs. He set them beside the freshkill, pushing it aside for himself later. "These are called horsetail. They're used to treat minor bleeding and the sap from the stems," he held up a stalk with his paw, the end tilted towards the apprentice so she could see, "can be used to prevent infection." He put the stalk of horsetail in front of Featherpaw, grabbing another stalk for himself. "I can't waste any herbs at them moment, since it's Leafbare and my herb store is growing low, but I still tell you how to use it." he said, putting the horsetail down. "You simply chew it until it becomes too sticky to move in your mouth. Then, you spit it out and apply it to the wounded area and squeeze the sap out onto the wound. Here," he said, pushing the stalk towards the apprentice. "Get a good sniff, Darkclan territory is covered in them, but this is what they smell like when they're ready to be picked." he said, wrapping his tail around his paws.

Featherpaw was elated by the smile that had briefly appeared on Spiderface's muzzle, her eyes brightened and she sat up straighter. She recognized the herb that Spiderface pulled out of his stores, they were abundant in Darkclan territory and she had seen a few clumps of them here and there. Her ears perked as she listened intently to the gray tom as he explained the healing properties of horsetail. The small Darkclan apprentice knew that every herb was needed during leaf-bare and could be the difference between a clanmate's life or death. The thin green stalks had a musty scent accompanied with a hint of sweetness, making Featherpaw sneeze. The soft bristles on the plant moved slightly and she wrapped her fluffy tail lightly against her gray-tabby pelt. "S-Sorry," the small apprentice stuttered, her usual proud and determined personality had been shattered by a simple sneeze. She leaned in closer and studied the plant carefully, trying to memorize its scent and wanting to make sure that she could recognize it even during the confusion and noise of a battle. "Thank you," the sound of her own voice startled her, not knowing what she was doing, Featherpaw continued. "For agreeing to teach me... I guess I'm not really used to being acknowledged that much.." The small tabby she-cat still didn't know why she was telling this to the old medicine cat, but she felt better after confessing her insecurities. Blaze

Shadowcat Spiderface gave a small jump as Featherpaw sneezed, flicking a single ear as he settled. He resisted the urge to chuckle, and simply nodded. He perked up as she spoke again, tilting his head in confusion. "I'm simply doing what Ravenstar instructed me to do. There's no need to thank me, Featherpaw." he said, looking at the apprentice. She honestly intrigued him, most apprentices wouldn't be so eager to learn about boring old herbs. He cleared his throat. She had a mentor already, even if they weren't here right now. Darkclan would get them back from Thunderclan and that would be the end of it. "Right. So if you're finished scrutinizing the herb,I can move on to the next one, correct?" he said, whisking the horsetail away. He pushed a few seed forward, putting the horsetail back in it herbstore. "These are poppy seeds. They're normally used to dull pain, put cats to sleep and ease shock. You simply eat and wait for them to take effect. They're only found on poppy flowers, which only grow near Thunderclan and Windclan territory. You won't need to know what the flowers look like, since you won't find them in the heat of battle, so you'll only need them from me." he said, holding his paw out with a single seed in it.

The young tabby apprentice was grateful that the medicine cat understood, the slight feeling of tension in her chest had melted away, leaving a renewed sense of determination. After giving the patch of horsetail a last scouring look, Featherpaw nodded and sat back, letting it be whisked away by the tom and sorted backing into the store of herbs. Locking away the memory of the herb into her mind before looking to see what the next one was, she let it be placed among the important facts about hunting and battle moves. The small, black poppy seeds seemed to give off a slightly sweet and fragrant scent. "How many should a cat eat?" Featherpaw asked, she knew that although the seeds were small, they were still strong. Too many may have dangerous side effects to the cat who consumed it. If she was too aid her clanmates in relieving their pain, she wanted to do it correctly and leave them in no further danger.
