She needed to see him. Ravenstar crept through RiverClan territory carefully, keeping herself cloaked in shadows. She couldn’t risk being seen here. It was the dead of night, and the leader of DarkClan was in the middle of another Clan’s territory. If RiverClan’s night Patrol saw her, she’d have another war on her paws, no doubt about it. She reached another point in the territory where she had to cross the ice. Great StarClan, is their territory just one big island? How many rivers are there? She thought, clearly annoyed. It was odd seeing the rivers still frozen. The one around Five Stones had thawed completely at the last gathering. She was glad that was over. Though it was the last time she had seen Stormstar. It felt like it has been an eternity since she’d seen him last, despite it only being a few days. She needed to tell him how she felt. It couldn’t wait. Even if he didn’t feel the same, which she had a sneaking suspicion that he didn’t, she needed to get it off her chest. She needed to have it out there so it wouldn’t eat her up any longer. She would feel better if it was all over. The crippling heartache wouldn’t be as bad as how she felt holding it all in. Ravenstar carefully placed her paws on the ice, heating it crackle as she did. She’d have to run. There was no guarantee it would hold. She took a deep breath before sprinting as quickly as she could, the ice cracking as she did. She was close to the end. Ravenstar braced herself to jump until the ice collapsed under her paws. She let out a screech as she fell into the frigid water. The initial shock had her unable to move, despite everything within her screaming to. Her limbs burned. Ravenstar flailed her paws desperately until she reached the surface where she fell in. Most of the ice had broken, so if she could manage to swim to it, she’d be safe. Problem was, she was no RiverClan cat, and she had no idea how to swim. She’d seen RiverClan swim before, but they swam like otters. Only their heads were visible. She remembered hearing heard a former RiverClan warrior, now Clanmate, mention it was like running, but in the water. She tried replicating that movement, but it ultimately didn’t work very well. It felt awkward, and she wasn’t getting very far, just keeping herself afloat. She’d freeze to death and drown if she didn’t get to shore quickly. StarClan couldn’t teach her how to swim. This would be a pretty terrible way to die. Ravenstar made it so that her paws could finally touch the ground. Thank StarClan. The night was somewhat warm, so perhaps she would be okay. Once she reached solid ground, she flopped down onto her stomach let let out a sigh of relief and exhaustion. That was something she desperately hoped would never happen again. She licked the fur on her chest before shaking out her pelt. If she kept moving, hopefully she’d stay warm. If she didn’t freeze to death, she’d definitely hear a lot from Spiderface about getting sick. She quickened her pace as she crossed onto WindClan territory, still playing it safe, though having herself be less covered in shadows. If Stormstar was on patrol tonight, she wanted him to be able to see her. 20mia08 This takes place after the current gathering

Stormstar
notes
War was inevitable.
It kept him up at night, nagging at him like a thorn in the side. He feared for the safety of WindClan, he feared for what the kittens of future generations in his clan may or may not have. If RiverClan aimed to steal some of WindClan's territory, how would he ensure that future mouths would have prey to feed them? The enemy clan might be starving now, but who was to say that his clan wouldn't be in their place, should they lose the land they needed to supply their growing nursery?
This was his second patrol, one immediately after the other, and the final one for the evening. He had considered resting, but the thoughts clouded his mind so densely that sleep couldn't possibly fight its way in. Their pace had even been too slow for Stormstar, who had begun to jog circles around the clearly-irritated warriors, so he decided to break off on his own. They seemed thankful to be relieved of the burden, to say the least. Not only did they have to avoid part of the border, but they were no longer dizzy from watching the pacing leader.
Eyes narrowed in focus and ears perked, he journeyed onward, pawsteps falling light on the compact earth. While he preferred the diplomatic approach, he wouldn't hesitate to deal out a good warning to any RiverClan warriors he might come across on the border. Matters were becoming serious, and sooner or later, it would become a sink-or-swim situation. He was aware that the water-loving clan had a democratic system, in which all members voted on a decision...well, if he could convince a warrior that an attack would do them no good, than that was one less body for Stormstar to concern himself with.
In the distance, he spotted the outline of a dark figure, one that almost appeared familiar. However, the shape was deformed by a wet coat, making it significantly more difficult for the leader to identify the stranger. Could it be...? No- impossible! This was RiverClan's border, DarkClan cats wouldn't dare to stray so far. With his fur bristling and limbs stiffening, he inched closer in an attempt to make himself appear larger. "Who goes there?" He barked out in a deep tone, hopefully making himself sound more intimidating.

Only time will tell if we’re all just cynics on the run #### Ravenstar's eyes fell on Stormstar as he spoke. "Oh thank StarClan." She let out a sigh of relief. She approached him with a smile, though she was shivering like crazy. If she saw herself at the moment, she'd describe herself as a drowned rat. And to think she spent so much time grooming her pelt before coming. She took a deep, but shaky breath. If it were any colder she could swear her pelt was turning into one big dark ice cube.
"S-Stormstar, I needed to s-s-speak with you." Her teeth were chattering. At first, she was completely prepared for rejection. But after nearly drowning and with how damned cold it was outside, she'd probably lose it. She hoped to StarClan all of this would end up being worth it. If we’re all just cynics come undone

Stormstar
notes
As he stalked forward, he prepared himself for a potential skirmish, willing to do whatever necessary to drive this intruder off. However, a familiar scent washed over him as he inched closer, one that made his body finally relax, yet his chest flutter. "Ravenstar!" He gasped, as if his breath had suddenly been stolen from him. He rushed forward with a concerned expression when he realized that her entire form was quivering. Wait- she swam here? Why? That was gross! Did she have a message for him, a warning about RiverClan?
So many thoughts and questions swarmed his head at once, and he was already overwhelmed, but first thing was first. She was freezing, and a cat with wet fur out in this weather was likely to die. Stormstar liked Ravenstar, and he couldn't let that happen on his watch. "Crazy mouse-brain, you're freezing! C'mere." Whether she liked it or not, he refused to let her freeze to death out in the barren moorland. She was stubborn, but he was selfless- he would drag her by the tail to a fire element if necessary. Even if it was too late for him to help, he would never let her lose a life on her own.
Using his side to give her a small nudge, he ushered Ravenstar to lay down, already wrapping his silvered form around her shadowy fur to provide her with whatever warmth and comfort he could. He didn't bother to ask about what she came for- this was more important. In all of his moons, he had never imagined himself getting this close to a DarkClan cat, let alone another leader whose duty was to enforce the code. But here he was: getting his fur wet, conspiring with a DarkClan cat that was also a leader, and possibly breaking the code.
You know I want you...it's not a secret I'm trying to hide. Oh StarClan- what was he thinking?

Only time will tell if we’re all just cynics on the run #### Ravenstar was about to open her mouth to speak again, until he did. Under normal circumstances, she'd give any cat who called her that unjokingly a cuff around the ear at best. But she didn't care that he did. Her limbs felt so relieved once she was laying down, finally getting a break. She was exhausted.
Her heart raced as he laid next to her, pressing himself against her in hopes to warm her. Ravenstar's eyes widened in shock for a moment. She wanted to cry with joy. She felt like she could stay here forever. Ravenstar had never felt so safe and so happy before. It was all wrong in the eyes of the warrior code, but it felt so right to her.
This was everything she had ever dreamed of.
"I-I can't keep lying to myself anymore. I have to do this." She meowed. She took a deep breath. "Everything about what I'm feeling is wrong, but I don't care. I-I...I love you, Stormstar. A-And I just needed to get all of this off of my chest." She confessed.
"I-If you don't feel the same, I understand. If you want all of this to end, I can take it. I-I wouldn't blame you for anything." She looked into his eyes. Her words were lies. Her heart would shatter if this were to end.
"I-I'm sorry if th-this is sudden...but I just couldn't wait any longer." If we’re all just cynics come undone

Stormstar
notes
Stormstar was aiming to help groom her fur to hopefully help her dry out, but there was something else in the air that made him feel...uncomfortable. There was something she was hiding, something on her chest that was begging to get out and needed to be released. Another bout of anxiety welled up in his chest, but he forced himself to keep it down. It was just him and Ravenstar under the stars in the safety of his borders, there was nothing for him to worry about. She was in danger, yes- he knew that very well, both of them did. Yet, that wasn't what was eating at him, it was something else he couldn't quite...describe. Concern? Curiosity? Fear?
Patiently, he stared at her with gentle grass-green eyes, letting Ravenstar speak her mind on her own time. Death was lingering threateningly close, but this little moment he was having with his best friend felt like it was moving in slow motion, like time and space did not matter. RiverClan- it didn't matter. The code? Long gone. It was just Stormstar and Ravenstar, and he...well, he'd have it no other way.
He perked his ears when she spoke up in an uncertain tone, but he tried his best to remain cool under the intense pressure and worry he was feeling, for her sake. Her frame was cold to the touch, yet he continued to absorb every detail of the moment: her eyes, the sound of her shaky voice, the soft feel of her fur (even if soaked), the foreign scent of her clan...
"I love you, Stormstar."
The earth vanished beneath his paws. Love- was that this unidentifiable sensation he was constantly suffering from? Was this why he longed for those deep conversations with her under the moonlight, not just for political reasons? Did he really see Ravenstar as just his...friend? He was feeling dizzy from the overload of stimulation and sudden breaking of her news, and the code-...
Stormstar drew in a deep breath as he tried to make sense of the situation, to try to think. Think, think, think- why did he always have to do that? Why couldn't he just act for once? "...No. It couldn't wait any longer." Finally he spoke as he stared at his paws and then hers, his voice quiet. What was he supposed to do? How could Ravenstar do this with such ease and little hesitation?
Instinctively, he rested his broad head on the raven-colored she-cat's shoulders. "...What do we do, Ravenstar? How do we rewrite the stars?" He was uncertain of how to reciprocate her feelings, or at least, tell her how he felt the same. He could only hope that she understood the message that he was trying to send.

Only time will tell if we’re all just cynics on the run #### When Stormstar rested his head on her shoulders, it felt like all the weight of responsibility just disappeared. How do we rewrite the stars? She closed her eyes for a moment. "We don't have to obey what's written." She murmured. Why did they need to follow an outdated code? Why did they need to follow StarClan's design? Even if they were sent to the dark forest for following their hearts, they'd be there together, right? That's all that mattered.
Ravenstar rested her head on her paws, the overwhelming exhaustion taking hold. She could feel it in her bones that if she closed her eyes, she'd be seeing someone from StarClan. In a strange way, it seemed fitting. She couldn't think of a better person to lose her first life with.
She let out a heavy breath as her eyes closed. Ravenstar's body went still.
Her former mentor, Oak-, stood waiting. She looked into his green eyes, unsure of what to expect from him. As a ThunderClan cat, what did he think of all of this? A Dark elemental, in love with a tom from another Clan. Lynxstar would smite her. Oak- remained silent. His silence spoke volumes. She didn't need his approval. To hell with StarClan's approval.
When she opened her eyes again, warmth had returned to her limbs. She'd be safe for now, so long as she didn't go swimming again. There were no promises that she wouldn't catch a cold, though.
"We can follow our own path. We can write our own destiny." She said softly. If we’re all just cynics come undone

Stormstar
notes
When he felt her form grow lifeless, he sensation for mournfulness washed over him, but Stormstar managed to hold it together. With Ravenstar's death, blossomed their newfound love. Their new life, together. Where would they go, and how would they do it?
It didn't matter, like Ravenstar said. Whatever they did, they'd do it together.
He remained by her side, allowing his warmth to welcome her back into the world of the living after her momentary visit with StarClan. He let out a small and almost inaudible sigh of relief when Ravenstar came to again, shifting slightly at her statement. A small smile formed on his somber face, his slowly shutting as a feeling of tranquility and happiness warmed his belly. "And there wouldn't be anyone else I'd want to journey into the unknown with." The future was terrifying, it had always antagonized him with cruel thoughts that kept him up at night. But today, for once, what had driven him from his den had placed him in a situation that made him realize so much.
After a while, Stormstar peeled back his eyelids to glance up at the twinkling stars once more. Were they scowling at them, was his brother up there with a look of disgust? But...what did it matter? StarClan had watched as they fell into war, they allowed the dark elements to be tormented for so many moons, they said nothing when WindClan needed help with the wolves. His gaze suddenly hardened, almost as if challenging his ancestors to tell him that his heart was wrong to feel the way it did, to guide him to a cat as lovely as Ravenstar. Let them stare, let them cringe: they would be happy regardless of what their ancestors thought. If the clans disapproved of their actions...then he would go to war, for her.
"I don't need a prophecy to tell me what's wrong and what's right. What's right is how I feel right now, with you." At last, he seemed to muster up the words.

Only time will tell if we’re all just cynics on the run #### Ravenstar nodded as he spoke. "I wouldn't have it any other way." She meowed at his comment of venturing into the unknown. There was once a time where she'd think none of this would be possible. Where her freedom, and her Clan didn't exist. But tonight, she had all that, and more. She had Stormstar. And in her eyes, it was all the she-cat would ever need for the rest of her days.
She closed her eyes and smiled for a moment, listening to his words. "We didn't need to follow StarClan's guidance to lead us here." She nodded. "We are our own people. We make our own decisions. They don't get to judge us." Ravenstar flicked an ear.
The dark coloured molly nuzzled the smoke tom, a purr rising from her throat. Stormstar made her the happiest cat in the valley, and nothing could convince her otherwise. All the worries and stress from ThunderClan and Lynxstar were gone when she was with him. If we’re all just cynics come undone

Stormstar
notes
His loyalties to WindClan could not be doubted, the moor and wind coursed through his veins since day one. But Ravenstar...something drew Stormstar to her, like it was fate, a fate that not even StarClan could control. As she spoke with amiable words that warmed him to the core, he lowered his head to busy himself with drying her fur, so as to not risk losing her to StarClan once more.
He didn't want to leave her, regardless of how much he loved his clan. WindClan ran in his blood, but the DarkClan she-cat...she had his heart, and it would be hers until the end of time. "WindClan, DarkClan, ThunderClan, StarClan...nothing in between us will keep me from always returning to you, Ravenstar. Even if I am to grow blind and old, my paws and heart will always guide me to you." And that, that was a promise he intended on keeping to the grave and beyond.
The leader ceased his grooming of her pitch-black fur to rest his head on top of hers once more with a heavy, joyful sigh. Why was the code and StarClan so set on preventing happiness, outlawing what the heart and soul felt was so right? He didn't understand, the only thing different and put between them was a set of imaginary borders and laws that argued in favor of separation.
Unity: that was what the clans needed, something like he and Ravenstar had.
If every cat could feel as radiant and free as he did with Ravenstar, there would be no need for borders and war.
