The young warrior was up before dawn, preparing himself for the morning's patrol. It took him a while, u usually, to shake off the cobwebs of sleep - he would eat and groom himself, waiting for the sun to brighten the sky. This morning had been no exception as he crept out of the den before the other warriors were awake. It wasn't difficult. Since moving out of the nest he had shared with Sandwhisker, his nest was now very close to the entrance of the den - plenty of furry bodies to act as buffer between them.
The first of the sun's rays were just creeping up on him as he sat licking his paw near the centre of camp when he spotted movement in the warriors' den. He drew his paw over his ear, not bothering to move until Reed- padded over to him. The lithe she-cat dipped her head at him and he returned the gesture, making to stand up. Something was wrong. There was an odd expression on her face. Guilt?
"What is it?" he meowed slowly, gaze fixed on her even as she wouldn't meet his eyes.
"Nothing, just, uh.. well.."
He waited for her to spit it out, and when she did, he jumped to his paws so suddenly that she flinched.
"You asked her to come with? Reed-! You know what happened!"
"That was moons ago," she hissed back, her voice hushed.
"You're Clanmates! This was going to happen eventually!"
Yes, he thought, eventually. Not today.
Even as he thought it, he saw movement in the den again, and his stomach jolted. There was time for him to prepare himself for the awkwardness ahead.
