Life thus far just hadn't been fair to poor Acornpaw. He was an isolated tom, a total odd-ball compared to all of the other apprentices born into ThunderClan (excluding his brother, for the most part). He had no tail, had no real parents, and worse of all: he had no control over his rare hybrid element. He was without a storm-element mentor, leaving Acornpaw incapable of learning his powers to their full extent. Sure, he could learn the basics from a normal mentor: how to hunt, how to fight, but to control the obnoxious static that followed the creamsicle of an apprentice everywhere? He'd been kicked out of the apprentice's den- twice- for accidentally electrocuting the cat sleeping next to him. It was embarrassing, and left him feeling empty. Why couldn't he be normal? Why did he have to stick out like a sore thumb? The self-conscious apprentice, sitting awkwardly as if to hide his lack of tail, frowned down at the semi-frozen water. It really sucked, feeling like a loser. Acornpaw appreciated having Fogpaw around, because sometimes, he just wanted to cuddle into the fur of another cat and sob away. His brother would let him, but the others? They liked neither his lack of personal space, nor his electrically-charged fur.

Soft-tailAs the sun shined up in the sky, the cinnamon tom decided to go around the territory and hunt a little. With a few sleepy mice caught by him and hidden away, he was ready to turn back to Camp and bring back his catches. But then, his leaf coloured gaze stumbled upon the cream form of another cat. Quickly, he deduced the tom was Acornpaw. 'Apprentices shouldn't be out on their own, especially ones without mentor,' the warrior thought. Placing the fresh-kill he had in his jaws down, the feline trotted over to the awkwardly sitting tom. Pawstep by pawstep, the remining frosted grass crunched under his feet as he approached the apprentice. "Would you mind telling me why you're out here, alone?" Soft-tail began, his voice calm and his stare emotionless. 20mia08

When the stoic voice of an adult tom rang out, the cream apprentice shifted quickly, almost as if to hide his rumpy-manx tail, arching his back so that he could completely sit on the portion of his rump with where his tail should have been. There was no denying that he was breaking a small handful of rules that applied strictly to apprentices, so he wasn't going to be argue otherwise. But then again, Acornpaw was never one for worshiping rules as if they were StarClan- he was much more causal in his approach to life. Clingy, with no appreciation of personal space, and far too self-conscious for his own well-being. Not to mention, he wasn't particularly motivated to be a warrior, it meant that his childhood would be over with, and his powers... ...who was to say that he'd even make it that far in life? "I-I didn't mean to cause any trouble, sir..." With his brows furrowed to express his concern, Acornpaw's pale gaze shifted to his paws. "I just...feel bad about giving everyone a static shock. Camp's so busy during mid-day, and so everyone gets too close and I rub past them, and-" He was talking so fast because his chest was growing so tight from his sudden on-set anxiety, like all the air was being squeezed from his lungs. The apprentice paused to take in a deep breath, so that he could finally finish his sentence. "...it's just so hard." Why did StarClan make him so different? So emotional? Ioana003

Soft-tail“Understandable, but you should at least tell someone where you’re going,” the blotched tabby concluded. Not wanting to leave the apprentice alone, the warrior decided that perhaps spending some time around the distressed tom would be best. Swiftly turning around, the warrior dug out a mouse. He wasn’t on a patrol and he wouldn’t eat himself, therefore it didn’t cross any rules. “Here,” mumbled the cinnamon cat. “You can eat this.” He dropped the fresh-kill down and promptly sat next to the cream apprentice. While he didn’t quite understand what his clanmate was going through, he could try imagining it, and it wasn’t great. Using his Strengthen ability, Soft-tail covered his fur with a thin layer of dirt. It wouldn’t protect him much from the shocks but it should at least make them bearable. He waited for the apprentice to eat. 20mia08

He sniffled a little bit, trying to hide the fact that he felt horrible about going against authority, because he was weak and honestly a huge baby. "I-I didn't mean to be gone long, honest." In reality, Acornpaw didn't really think that anyone would notice his sudden disappearance, or better yet, care that he had taken a temporary leave from camp. He continued to stare hard at the frigid water for several moments, until he noticed the warrior digging in the hard earth and had his attention stolen elsewhere. He was surprised to have the warrior drop the mouse at his paws. Admittedly, the apprentice was starving- he had been thinking more so about how upset he was, and not about the fact that he'd gone and skipped breakfast. Now more than ever, he felt like eating his feelings away, so he was going to happily oblige. However, upon noticing that Soft-tail had chosen to seat himself next to the apprentice (while simultaneously feeling his static-charged hairs rise), Acornpaw naturally scooted a small distance away, to avoid frying the cat that was trying to be his friend. It'd be rude to shock him. "...Thanks." The creamsicle tom squeaked. Ioana003

Soft-tailLight filtered through the few leaves that hung over them. Somewhat saddened, the tom turned his head for a second to the oaks that loomed over patches of grass away from them. He yearned to be up there in a bed of leaves. But it was more important to help another clanmate than to climb a tree. Looking back at the apprentice, Soft-tail noticed how he had moved slightly away but he did not give much thought to that. “You know, you’re not the only one who has had problems with their element,” began the tom. “I used to Bloom flowers all over my tail whenever I got mad which hurt a lot whenever vines starting squeezing it, and leaving trails of grass everywhere isn’t quite as fun as it might seem, especially when others tend to trip on them. I might not be able to help you with your element, but I could tell you what worked for me so I wouldn’t die because I couldn’t breathe since plants covered my face.”The warrior waited patiently for the apprentice to respond, his leafy eyes looking on at him. 20mia08

Acornpaw had always admired the work of the earth elements, with how they were capable of producing life at the flick of a tail, rather than destroying it with a simple wave of their paws. The latter was a perfect representation of the apprentice's case. He knew that consumption was on the horizon, that he was bound to suffer from a most slow and horrible death that none could save him from. There were very, very few storm elements that he had ever heard of, and both hailed from RiverClan. ThunderClan would never seek aid from them, and quite frankly, Acornpaw didn't want to live with a bunch of cats that stank of fish. His nose was sensitive. The fuzzy feline continued to slowly devour his meal, savoring its flavor while attentively listening to the young warrior's story. He wished that StarClan had given him earth instead of storm, he really liked flowers. "At least you get to smell good, like flowers and fruity things." Acornpaw voiced up before shyly glancing in the other direction, feeling as if he might have offended Soft-tail. However, the hope of a potential life-saving solution caused him to perk his ears up once more. There was a chance? "What did you do, Mr. Soft-tail?"Ioana003

Soft-tail
“Well,” began the warrior, “I started by practicing mostly small stuff, like concentrating everything in only one place. Instead of getting my tail broken because of vines, I tried focusing on my legs, something like this-” and, slowly, a flower as bright as the sun sprouted, its leaves hugging the tom’s leg, their deep green sparkling under sunlight like the rapid currents of the river that splashed wildly around the gray rocks. “Then,” continued the cat, his voice steady but warm, “I tried concentrating on smaller and smaller patches, mostly the paws.” And with that, the flower slid closer and closer to the feline’s cinnamon paws and then wilted. Soft-tail knew it probably wouldn’t be the same for the apprentice, his belly churning like the fires that swivelled around whenever ShadowClan thought appropriate to burn their own hunting grounds (and then ThunderClan’s) at the thought of the apprentice being consumed by his own element. But if the warrior could at the very least elongate the young cat’s time, it would be more than enough for him. “Maybe you could do the same. Whenever you feel stressed, try concentrating on one spot that won’t shock others.” He fell quiet. It’s not that the cinnamon cat didn’t know what else to say, he didn’t know how to. But, as a warrior, he had to help the apprentice in every way possible. With a sigh and eyes filled of sympathy like the sun that always lit the day, he spoke: “Listen, Acornpaw. I know you might not like your element, but you’re very unique, and you should be proud. Yes, Earth allows you to make flowers or remake a burned forest, but you can also do something. You can wield thunder itself. Maybe you won’t quite be able to help with ShadowClan, but you can still use it for something. As a ThunderClan cat, loyalty and protecting each other is extremely important, and I think that a lightning storm would be much better at protecting someone that a measly flower.”
And so, the young tom finished, his leaf-green gaze remaining on the apprentice. He was nowhere near sure anything he said would help, but at least his heart felt lighter – almost like a feather – now that he said what the cat wanted to say. 20mia08

The peacefulness that the earth elements carried suddenly took a dark and twisted turn. He never really imagined that creating flowers from nothing could cause a cat intense pain. When he thought about it, it was probably possible for an untrained earth element to cut off their own circulation and ultimately lose a limb. Acornpaw cringed inwardly at the thought, but made no comment of it as he politely listened to the warrior's example and later his suggestion. "It's really hard, sir," he finally started up in a squeaky protest, "the static likes to travel all over, and my fuzzy fur doesn't help. It's...it's kinda like honey, how it sticks to everything." It was a strange way to describe it, but it was the only illustration Acornpaw could think of that Soft-tail could possibly relate to. However, his words of enthusiasm did spark a little pride on the shameful apprentice's heart. ThunderClan...he was from ThunderClan and only he could control the thunder with his paws! Well, perhaps not control it, not yet, but he could still wield it. "I guess I am what ThunderClan is named after." He couldn't help but to blush awkwardly at the realization. The apprentice didn't want to at all be destructive like Soft-tail may or may not have been suggesting, he found it incredible that his clanmates could completely heal an annihilated forest. But maybe he secretly had healing properties, too? After all, his element was one scarcely known, but perhaps it was better that way. "Thank you, Mr. Soft-tail. I think I feel better now." The mouse was gone, and he did have a few tufts of bloody rodent fur stuck to the corners of his grin, but his smile was ear-to-ear and his eyes round with admiration for the inspirational warrior. Soft-tailPride spread over the cinnamon warrior, yet it only manifested in one single twitch of the tail. After all, the tom had managed to somehow lift up the spirit of Acornpaw, and perhaps even more, what was there not to be prideful of? But he had to maintain his head out of the clouds – he couldn’t quite show how much something like this actually meant. The smile the apprentice gave still lifted his mood, though, quickly seeming to forget about the trouble that did hang around the younger cat. “Glad to have helped,” meowed the tom. “But we should go back to Camp before anybody becomes worried.” He stood up, his paws leading the cat to where he had buried most of the prey. “Come and help me carry this back. I’m sure someone will appreciate it.”Soft-tail waved his tail forward and turned around, no longer facing the apprentice, and picked up some of the fresh-kill. He waited calmly for Acornpaw to do the same, after which he would start walking back to Camp if Acornpaw chose to help. 20mia08
