Hailfall sat by the stream, watching the water move intently. He sometimes found minnows swimming down to the river. They weren't much, but it would at least put a little bit of meat on their bones. Some cats hadn't had a meal in a while. Just the taste of something was enough to raise morale a little. He was hungry. Everyone was. A few minnows could do something for someone. He had to keep telling himself that.
Something caught his eye. He focused on the water, seeing a small figure swimming. He scooped it up and snapped the fragile spine. Hailfall sighed. This would never be enough for anyone, not even a kit who was starting to be weaned. The sight of it made his mouth water. His stomach growled loudly. This wouldn't do anyone any good. But maybe it would help take his mind off of his hunger. He crouched down and took a bite out of the minnow.
The sound of rustling from behind made him prick his ears. Someone was coming.

The she-cat made her way towards the river, belly feeling emptier than ever. She'd been giving all the food she could to the young kit she had adopted and her apprentice. The young were more important than herself. The sounds of the river just ahead, her pace getting slightly faster. Roseprance stepped out of the brush, shaking her fur. Freezing once her eyes landed on another warrior, she relaxed. "Oh, hello. Fishing as well?"
Polite as always, she made sure to keep her distance, moving her eyes to the river. The minnow here were even smaller. The urge to give up was strong, though she forced herself to stay.

Hailfall turned around and flicked his tail. He recognized his Clanmate, Roseprance, and dipped his head. "Er, yes." He replied. The tom wrapped his tail around his paws and looked down at the minnow he had begun to eat. It wasn't breaking the code if he shared it with her, was it? He could see her ribs poking out of her pelt clearly. She wasn't eating either. "Here, you can have some of this. You look hungry." He looked away.

Her eyes glanced towards Hailfall, then the minnow at his paws. "Oh...I can't. My kit and apprentice have to eat first." Roseprance replied with a smile, "Thank you, though. I won't tell, by the way. Everyone is hungry, and we're all bound to make mistakes because of it." Her gaze returned to the river, a paw suddenly striking. A tiny minnow was hooked onto a claw, a sigh of disappointment leaving her. If they were all this size, she'd have to fish all day.
She kept her paw poised just above the water, eyes darting about, looking for something worth-while. "I've never seen such...a small amount of good prey." She'd say aloud, mostly to herself. "There's gotta be something better...At this rate, Badgerpaw and Mothkit aren't going to..." Roseprance stopped, not wanting to think of the worst. She'd just received Badgerpaw as her apprentice, and she had only adopted Mothkit less than a moon ago... |

Hailfall shuffled his paws awkwardly. He had forgotten that Roseprance had adopted the orphaned Mothkit. It made sense that she'd want to care for her kit and apprentice first. He always made sure his mother ate before he did as well. When she spoke of keeping this between them, he nodded in appreciation. "Thank you." He meowed. Hailfrost took another bite of the minnow. There was barely any left already. He watched as she hooked another one and flicked his tail. "Good catch."
He nodded at her remark. This wasn't his first leafbare, but it was certainly the worst he had ever seen. "If WindClan would have just given up Hare Plains instead of making us fight for it, maybe we wouldn't have starved this much." He grumbled.

"Don't think differently me of me, but it was their territory. Though I would have loved it if they'd given it up, we would have fought for territory of our own, right?" She caught another minnow, adding it to the one she had caught previously. "I just need to make sure Mothkit and Badgerpaw eat today, and maybe I can catch something for myself..." Roseprance almost purred at the thought of herself eating, but glanced back at Hailfall. "You're just as hungry as I am...Here, eat these. They won't even fill Mothkit." The she-cat said, pushing the tiny minnows towards the tom. "I'm going to be fishing for a while."

Hailfall grumbled as she remarked that they'd defend their territory as well. It still didn't change the fact that the rabbit chasing WindClan warriors had significantly more meat on their bones than they did. He just prayed this long leafbare would come to an end. Hailfall finished his minnow and covered the bones with loose soil and pebbles. He flicked his ear when she spoke again. Hailfrost shook his head when she offered the two minnows to him. "No, no. It's fine. I'm sure you'll catch more to make somewhat of a meal for Mothkit. I've broken the code enough for one day." He said, flicking his tail. "And if you don't, two minnows are better than nothing for her."simonwho |

The she-cat only nodded in response. "I hope leaf-bare ends soon. I can't stand seeing the clan like this." Roseprance stared down into the water, searching for another piece of prey. Though, they seem to have all fled. The fire element huffed, ears flattening.
"I do wish Windclan had lost...I don't want to see my only kit or clan die because of this." The she-cat sat back, tail curling around her. Still, she waited, eyes locked onto the river. Two tiny minnows would be enough to make sure Mothkit didn't starve, right?

Hailfall nodded at her response. This was the longest leafbare they had seen in a long time, or so the elders would say. He hoped newleaf would bring good hunting once more. The sooner the ice would thaw on the rivers, the better for RiverClan. Though Hailfall's element was stronger and easier to control in leafbare, he would rather he sub-par in any greenleaf battles than watch his clan starve in a leafbare that seemed to last an eternity. Who's to say his mother wouldn't fall ill or starve? Or the kits in the Clan? "It's perfectly reasonable to wish that WindClan had lost. We had so much on the line when we voted to fight." He said. "Those rabbit chasers looked like they were in better shape than we are, they should have just given it up to us. They could make do without that territory. We need it to survive until the rivers thaw." Hailfall grumbled. "Stormstar was selfish."simonwho |
