Only a fool would hunt along the WindClan-RiverClan border only a few days after an outright war. Call the warrior a fool, or call her merely desperate- she was starving and knew that she had the right to live, to eat and not waste away in her own chocolaty fur. She paid little attention to the code and instead placed her faith and trust in the paws of StarClan. They would provide, especially when the code clearly could not...if only her clanmates were wise enough to see that. Sandwhisker had not been on the front-line when the war commenced, instead she was charged to stay at camp and defend it in the event that the attack backfired. Perhaps that was why she acted so half-witted about hunting along the border: she was inexperienced in the face of bloodshed. To add, her generally laid-back nature made her seemingly fearless in the face of danger, simply because she didn't give terror the time of day. She had much more important matters to attend to, like caring for her clanmates and begging StarClan to end the brutal leafbare, and send some sunshine in RiverClan's direction. Treading lightly on dainty paws, the RiverClanner stalked along the border in search of something that wasn't fish, something furry that could hopefully satiate at least an elder or a kitten. The river would give up no more of its fish, and so it was time that Sandwhisker turned to the land instead. simonwho

The tom made his way down the border, this time without his sister. He knew it wasn't the smartest idea he's had, though he was sure Riverclan wouldn't attack anytime soon. He hadn't fought, but he had been hunting quite a bit as of late. His tail flicked as he padded along; he wasn't patrolling nor hunting, just taking a walk. Beetlerunner sighed; ears laying flat. His siblings had also been busy, leaving the tom alone with his thoughts. The tom stopped, ears perking and head raising. Another cat. Though, they seemed to be Riverclan. Of course, it had to be the one time he was alone. 20mia08

The pointed she-cat had her underside pressed against the snow-spotted earth as she stalked after what appeared to be a vole. It was scrawny and undersized, likely starving itself, but anything would do at this rate. Scrawny prey was better than no prey. However, when Sandwhisker was at an appropriate distance to strike, she found that the creature was suddenly frightened and darted off into the frozen undergrowth, leaving her to scowl and be reminded of her growling belly. But it wasn't her stomach that had scared off the prey. Ears angling backwards out of uncertainty, the hungry warrior looked about frantically, like a deer that had heard the rustling of leaves. She wasn't alone- and what was worse, she'd passed over the WindClan border in pursuit of her prey. If she was caught by a WindClan patrol, they'd surely kill her. However, her eyes fell on what appeared to be a solo warrior, not an entire patrol. Sandwhisker stepped back anxiously before she attempted to regain her cool. If she acted like she wasn't a threat, things would escalate into a full-out brawl. "Uhm- hello there?"Nailed it. simonwho

A Riverclan she-cat on Windclan territory. Beetlerunner almost growled, though he thought better than to outright attack her. "Greetings." The tom replied, glancing around. What if this was a Riverclan attack? Not only was this cat in Windclan territory, but she had been hunting as well. And yet, the tom almost didn't care. The cat took a step forward, eyes locked onto her. "Hunting in Windclan territory? Riverclan must be desperate." Beetle said, voice not friendly nor hostile. Or perhaps she hadn't noticed she'd crossed the border? Either way, he wasn't supposed to be anything aside from hostile. "Well?" 20mia08

"It wasn't intentional." The warrior spoke up quickly out of desperation, taking yet another flighty step backwards towards her own border. The tom didn't seem particularly menacing, but by no means was Sandwhisker eager to take that chance. She had to find prey for her clan in order to provide and feed the hungry, but it wasn't worth making tensions worse and risk having WindClan take further actions. She was only one cat- her life wasn't worth much to her clan at the moment. If she was lost, it was just one less mouth to feed. However, she couldn't help but to narrow her frosted lenses at the mention of her clan being 'desperate'. Had he not noticed that her clanmates were nothing but husks of their former glorious selves? Had he not understood the reason for a full-out attack in an attempt to win Hare Plains? RiverClan hadn't charged onto their land out of boredom. "For the record, yes- we are desperate." There was a sudden hint of edginess in Sandwhisker's tone. While she was one of the chillest cats around, she wouldn't tolerate another stomping on her moral reasoning. "I have no blood to call my own, as my mate abandoned me the moment he discovered I couldn't bear his kits, but RiverClan? They are my family. My brothers and sisters are starving to death- and some of them are kits that haven't even had the opportunity to run the territory we call home. So yes, I'd say that we're desperate, because StarClan gave us all the right to breathe."simonwho

An eyebrow raised as she spoke, his tail swaying behind him gently as he stood still. "That wasn't what I meant. I meant desperate enough to hunt in the territory of the clan they lost to."
At the mention of her mate leaving her, his heart ached slightly. He didn't know how that would even feel; he had never had a mate before. "I...I'm sorry. That mate of yours doesn't deserve to even be called that." Beetlerunner almost growled, though kept it to himself. The tom didn't believe that he was feeling bad for the she-cat.
"I've never had a mate, so I don't have any blood of my own either. I can't even imagine how you feel, especially while starving...I could hunt something for you, but..." Oh, here he goes. Decision making like this was never his thing. It was either break the code - not that he really cared about it - or abide by it.

"I know." Sandwhisker held the WindClanner's gaze with her own intense sky-colored eyes. "My clanmates are on the brink of death. I'm willing to take just about any measure to ensure that they have even the tiniest meal to hold them over." It would kill a proud cat, cowering onto the enemy's territory and practically begging for scraps, but the warrior wasn't thinking about herself, or even hunting for herself. This was all for her clanmates, both you and old. The sand-colored feline allowed her gaze to drift elsewhere when he began to pity her for her former relationship. It wasn't anything new- it was a common reaction that she found in most cats when she admitted that she had been essentially cheated. But she didn't blame StarClan for the matter. If she wasn't meant to have kits, she simply wasn't meant to. "It's alright, that was well over a moon ago. My clan is my family now, they care for me." She spoke quietly when she responded to his sympathy. Him? Hunt for her? Well, if she was being completely honest, she'd had no chance against one of WindClan's hares, same as this stranger would be incapable of catching a fish in RiverClan's waters. "It's very kind of you to offer, but I've already broken the code, I don't want to force another to break it as well." Not that she ever minded the code, but she wasn't going to force her own views on this tom. He could've been a cat like Ashsong, one who wished for nothing but belonging and respect from clanmates. "I'm Sandwhisker."Why did she introduce herself? simonwho

"It takes a good warrior to put their clan before themself. I admire that." He said, giving the she-cat a smile. "I don't know many cats who'd do the same." The tom nodded, occasionally glancing around them to be sure a clanmate didn't come upon them. "Still, he doesn't deserve such a title. I think he's no better than a fox." At the mention of the code, he almost laughed. "The code? I don't care for it. My parents didn't like it, so I don't either. I can hunt for you." For once, he made a decision, though he wasn't quite sure why he wanted to help her. He'd soon sit down and relax, now sure she wasn't going to attack. "Sandwhisker? I'm Beetlerunner." 20mia08

She was a little taken back by the outsider's change in heart and kindness- she had honestly expected any WindClanner that she came across to be arrogant, rubbing their victory all over her face. With a small crack growing on her features, she couldn't help but to secretly admit to herself that she agreed with this tom's views on her former mate. "Believe me, I'd like to say the same to him. Nonetheless, I can't blame him for...wanting kits. I wanted them just as much, but oh well. I suppose it was just StarClan's way of telling me that he wasn't the one for me."He didn't believe in the code either? Well, that was an awfully valorous comment for him to make. At least his family actually agreed with him on his point of view- different interpretations of the code cost Sandwhisker her family. "I've always felt that the code's outdated and needs to be rewritten for 'modern' times. I'm much more devoted to StarClan than I am to some unspoken rule- alas, my mom and siblings didn't agree with my father and I. So here I am, ThunderClan-born and now RiverClan-living." Had she made the correct choice? Considering that she was practically starving to death, her siblings might argue that she hadn't. But, she had to get away from it all. Once more, she smiled at he spoke. "Beetlerunner"...she found his name to be quite adorable, but it'd be rude of her to say such a thing. "It's nice to meet you, Beetlerunner."simonwho

The grey tom only shrugged. "Perhaps." So, she believed in Starclan, but not the code. Odd, but intriguing, he'd think. He had to admit that the she-cat was pretty; what hare-brained tom would leave her just because of her inability to have kits?
"Left your clan because of them? I don't blame you. If my parents and siblings hadn't had the same views as I, I'm sure I would have left my clan as well." Beetlerunner seemed to have the same views on the code as the she-cat, almost wishing they were in the same clan so they could talk more. "I've never been outside of my clans territory. I've never been to a gathering."
"It's nice to meet you as well, Sandwhisker. I'm glad you weren't aggressive; it's nice to actually talk to a cat with the same views as I do."

She hadn't seen him at Gatherings before, and honestly, she was disappointed that she hadn't met him prior. Beetlerunner seemed like a good cat and certainly a feline she'd have no problem hanging around more often. Not to mention, he was kinda easy on the eyes. Most WindClan cats looked far too disproportionate for Sandwhisker's liking. Sure, he wasn't the tallest cat, but... ...what was she going on about? Pushing the thought aside, she offered the tom a small smile. "Maybe you'll get to attend the next one? They can be pretty entertaining, although I don't really care for the drama of the other clans. The stories of strangers are still interesting, nonetheless, but I don't think RiverClan appreciates my interest in the characters outside my borders." Sandwhisker saw no harm in making friends that weren't from RiverClan- even if it might make fighting them harder. But why fight when you could make peace through words? Sandwhisker swished her chocolaty tail. "If you're there at the next time, we definitely have to chat again, I find you fascinating. Otherwise...well, I do hunt in these parts quite a bit." She added a soft chuckle. "Not on your side of the border- my side, I meant."simonwho

"Perhaps. I wouldn't mind attending one; would be quite different, being in a truce with all the clans." Beetlerunner replied, ears flicking as birds flew overhead. "My own clan wouldn't be too happy if I took an interest with a different clan, though I don't think that having friends from a different clan is bad." He'd continue, looking up thoughtfully. He was enjoying talking to her, even though he knew he shouldn't. The tom nodded with a smile, "Yes, I would enjoy speaking with you again. Next time there's a gathering, I will see if I can attend. If not, you can probably find me along these borders." Beetlerunner chuckled at her last comment, "I'd think not, though I wouldn't mind be the one to take you back to your own territory. Any other Windclanner may attack you on sight." 20mia08

There was a glint in her turquoise pools. "Agreed- I see no problem with chatting with other cats in other clans. We're all just cats, after all. Maybe we have different stories or different elements, but in the end, we all have fur and whiskers." Sandwhisker murmured simply as she rose to her paws in a semi-stretch. If it wasn't for her thick coat of RiverClanner fur, her ribs would have been visible underneath her delicate skin from moons of prey shortage. With her muscles feeling less tense, the chocolate warrior began to saunter back into her own territory, although she didn't hesitate to turn back one more time to rest her pale gaze on Beetlerunner. He was pretty easy on the eyes. "I guess I'll have to see you again, then," the warrior spoke smoothly, like water over pebbles, before she finally turned and waved her tail in goodbye to the WindClan tom. simonwho

The tabby tom nodded, standing as well and shaking his fur, "Perhaps one day we can all be at peace." Beetlerunner said thoughtfully, glancing up at the sky. The tom decided he'd like to see her again; she gave much better conversation than those within his clan, and was very interesting. The tom was almost sad that she had to go, but he did as well; otherwise, his siblings would come looking for him, no doubt.
"I'd like that." He'd replied, watching her for a moment before turning away and leaving, tail waving in response as he trotted back towards camp. The tom surely would have to explain why he'd been gone from camp for so long, but he didn't mind.
