Talis Russetleaf sat before Otterpaw with his tail wrapped around his paws as he lectured. It was good that New Leaf had finally shown its rays upon RiverClan and thawed the river, now they could hunt freely and he could train his new apprentice without much trouble. It seemed so long ago that Watersong had trained him and Bumblepelt had given him his warrior name. He hoped they were happy with their family in StarClan, but now Russetleaf had a task. He was given Otterpaw not too long ago and it was clear to him that she would become a warrior RiverClan would be proud of. They had just come back from border patrol, Russetleaf slipping in a few bits of the warrior code in to quiz her later, just to see if she was paying attention. First things first, they had to list what they wanted to accomplish throughout her apprenticeship. He didn’t have very many goals in mind, to be completely honest. Perhaps he could pass on Watersong’s teachings while training, go over basic most definitely do some land hunting as well as water hunting first and then then elemental training. That was a good place to start as any. ”During your apprentice training, I want to at least teach you to not be so dependent on the river. This last Leaf Bare has shown us that we need to learn different ways to get food so that nothing like that happens again. We lost many cats, but StarClan willing, we won’t have to go deal with it once more. I also want to teach you a few elemental techniques. We won’t be doing much more than this for a while, at least until I’m sure you’re ready for more difficult moves. I hope that we have a great mentor-apprentice relationship and you grow to be the best warrior you can be!” he finished. ”Is there anything in particular you look forward to?”

Besides, what he was saying had value in it. However, Otterpaw couldn't really bring herself to fully pay attention. Her eyes kept darting to little insects or pretty leaves in the distance. The border patrol previously was uneventful. Otterpaw had to fight to not race off after a pretty butterfly, like always. She was a very easily distracted Apprentice. She did try to pay attention, she really did, but...pretty butterflies are pretty, okay? ...Oh, Russetleaf was talking. The she-cat snapped to attention as best she could. She nodded along as he talked, even though her mind had nearly instantly began to wander with her eyes. Russetleaf couldn’t even begin to stop the smile that blossomed onto his muzzle. He gave a kind nod before stood and beckoned the younger molly over to the shoreline. He lifted a bit of water from the river and held it around his paws. He slowly moved his paws around the large droplet of water, watching it ripple as it moved ”I’ll show you this for the time being so you can practice on your own when you have free time.” he said. The droplet slowly began to grow and lengthen, mimicking the waves splashing against the shore before them before Russetleaf allowed the water to fall into his paws and back into the river.
”Water isn’t like Air or Dark, though it’s similar. All three of those elements don’t have solid forms, but Water is a special case where we can still manipulate the shape it takes and we don’t have to squint to see what we’re looking at. To control it, you need to let the water flow while also guiding it to its target. Like the water, you need to be open to any possibilities that come your way.” he stated. ”Here. You give it a try.”

She saw another butterfly, and her eyes-and attention-was instantly locked onto the creature. No, no, no! She had to focus! If she didn't, how was she going to become a Warrior and learn the full extent of her skills? Inwardly reprimanding herself, Otterpaw turned back to Russetleaf. She tried to force herself to pay attention to Russetleaf, to no avail. Her eyes wandered off within seconds, this time to a particularly interestingly-shaped leaf. Otterpaw looked back just in time to see Russetleaf dropping water into the river. She didn't even see what he did. No way was Otterpw telling him that though. So, when Russetleaf asked her to do what he did, Otterpaw turned to the water and slowly tried to focus. Water began rising out of the river, swirling into a small sphere. Russetleaf gave an encouraging smile at the apprentice’s look, going through the motions again so she could copy. ”It’s like you’re mixing feathers around in your bedding, move your paws forward and back,” he said. ”This is something for you to practice on your own, so don’t worry about getting it right on the first try.” He stood to his paws to make his way over to Otterpaw and laid his tail on her shoulder. ”First, why don’t you show me what you know about fishing? I’ll need to teach you land hunting too, but I’m not the best at it myself,” he purred.

Maybe he didn’t even notice that she wasn’t paying attention? She couldn’t say for sure, but since he didn’t seem annoyed, that was her first assumption.
She watched Russetleaf move his paws again and began to mimic. Oh, so it was like mixing feathers! Otterpaw had played around with feathers a lot herself. Whenever she couldn’t sleep, her nest and the nests of anyone close by would be exceptionally messy the next day.
Otterpaw looked down at the water and began to focus. A ripple, then a little water rose upwards. She continued her movement, and her breathing began to adjust to her movements, falling into a rhythmic pattern. She found herself swaying back and forth as the droplet rippled. It looked about half to a third of the size of Russetleaf’s one, but it was a droplet nonetheless.
Otterpaw found herself entranced by the droplet. A rainbow danced across its surface, and her eyes followed it. Back, forth, back, forth-
Russetleaf’s tail coming into contact with her shoulder made the Apprentice start. The water crashed back into the river. She quickly pushed a smile onto her face, realising that she had paid such close attention to the water that she had been ignorant of whatever her Mentor had been saying.
Fishing. Right, fishing. Otterpaw’s tail swished back and forth as she attempted to recall. “I should sit where my shadow doesn’t fall on the water.” She started, then realised she didn’t remember much else. “Pretty much that, yeah.” She added, turning back to the water and adjusting her position to make sure her shadow didn’t fall on the water. He nodded approvingly as he moved beside her, copying her form. ”Very good! Don’t forget that fishing takes time and patience, too. You won’t always catch something, but it’s important that you keep going at it if you can, alright?” he whispers, so he doesn’t scare away any fish.
His eyes travel back to the water and he allows a silence to come over the two as he searches. Soon enough, his eyes fall onto a particularly large trout and he nearly jumps at it before he remembers Otterpaw. To catch her attention, he wills the water to babble a bit louder where the trout swims. This would be a good start for her, he thinks.
