Her paws had been burnt during the escape from camp, when she had turned back to help the old and young that had still been trapped inside. Damn ShadowClan for their atrocities. They'd get what they deserved, and she'd see to it... Newtpaw had made her way to the river for the purpose of soaking her paws. She didn't traditionally leave camp alone being that it was against the rules, but this time she'd gained permission and had a good reason to do so. The small singe scars from embers that she'd obliviously trekked over weren't particularly visible from a distance. They seemed to blend in remarkably well with the chocolate mottling on her points. But the pain was there, and StarClan was it persistent. If Newtpaw had been burned on her, say, tail...she wouldn't have minded as much. She didn't walk on her tail, she walked on her paws. She fought with her paws. If there's a war coming...I need to be prepared. The stocky feline loomed near the edge of the ice-cold water that was now babbling audibly since leafbare's ice had let it run free. Water wasn't exactly her favorite, but this was her only successful method when it came to numbing the daily pain. She couldn't spend her days doped up on poppy seeds. She needed to be aware, prepared, and alert so that she could properly learn from Lynxstar. She had grown and she had learned, but still Newtpaw felt that she wasn't ready. She was prepared to learn all that she could before she took up the mantle to ThunderClan, a great honor. She would serve them well. That being said, it would be foolish of me to be rash. Newtpaw bit her lip as she slowly eased her paws into the freezing river. Can't let those ShadowClan foxhearts get the best of me.simonwho

She had felt fear. She still felt fear. Lilacpaw was without her sisters; her best friends, and she felt beyond lonely. Her mentor hated her; for why, she didn't know, and didn't care enough to ask. Despite being a fire element herself, she had sustained several burns along her body, though they weren't serious; other cats had sustained much worse than herself. But the emotional scarring was much worse. Sure, her burns hurt every time she moved. And sure, breathing in smoke hadn't been the best feeling in the world. But the she-cat didn't have anyone to turn to, to talk to. She felt as if she had become a shell of who she was before. With a sigh, she'd quietly slip out of camp; she didn't dare ask Vixenleap for permission, or anyone else for that matter. She needed to get out, to be alone, even if for a heartbeat. She loved her clanmates dearly, but they could be overwhelming. Wincing every time she brushed against something, she finally managed to get away, only glancing back once to make sure no one had seen her leaving. Memories of sneaking out of camp with her sisters came flooding back to her, making her wish she had stayed behind with her sisters in the fire. Maybe she could have saved them. Shaking her head, she continued on before catching the scent of an all too familiar cat; Newtpaw. Why was she out here? Now pushing down the painful memories, Lilacpaw would follow the scent of the leader's apprentice, eventually finding her at the river. "Newtpaw...?" She'd say gently, slowly approaching the feline. "Are you okay?"

It didn't feel particularly enjoyable at first, with the apprentice clenching her teeth as cold ran through her fur. Her paws throbbed against the slippery rocks that lined the river, and at that moment, she prayed that a crayfish wasn't cruel enough to pinch her burnt paws. How the hell do RiverClan cats enjoy this? Newtpaw stiffly stepped forward in the shallows, ensuring that she kept close to the edge of the river, in the event that she low and footing and accidentally took a swim. The current was strong enough to tug against her mottled fur. Newtpaw wasn't an expert swimmer, so she wanted to ensure that all four of her paws remained on the ground. The older apprentice twitched her ears at a voice. For a heartbeat, she thought that it might have been an intruder, as she swore that no other ThunderClanner followed her out of camp. But perhaps she did catch the eye and concern of another cat, as it wasn't typical of her to leave camp without an escort. Newtpaw took rules and training very seriously. She unsheathed her claws underwater, in the event that she needed them to fend off the opposition (but also to help her balance on the rocks) while her pale blue eyes drifted back to the shore. Newtpaw forced her fur flat when she recognized it as one of her fellow apprentices: Lilacpaw, if she recalled correctly. Of course, the younger apprentice knew well of Newtpaw's name- the chocolate tortoiseshell point had quite an outstanding social presence. She was popular, she always had been, and she basked in that light. "...My paws were burned during the fire." She admitted, tail held parallel to the river in the event that she slipped and needed it for added balance. She moved around stiffly in the water, so that she could respectfully face Lilacpaw as she spoke to her. "...It's as cold as leafbare and it's not exactly fun, but it does help the burns feel better. Once they go numb, anyways."simonwho

Keeping a distance from the older feline, she watched as Newtpaw's fur bristled, though made no comment. She knew better. At the explanation, she only nodded. Her own burns hurt, but she couldn't imagine the pain of walking on burnt paws. For a moment, she stood there silently before making her way over, standing in the icy water of the river. She winced at the water, shivering. Newtpaw was right; it was as cold as leafbare. "Did something happen? You seem a bit different..." They weren't friends, Lilacpaw knew that, but the lynx point held concern for all her clanmates.
Her eyes were trained on the water in front of the pair, her face void of emotion. It was difficult for her to socialize without her sisters, but poor Lilacpaw had no choice now. She only wished the emotional pain would end. "Did you go to Sagewhisker about your paws yet?" She'd add in, glancing at Newtpaw as she asked.

She was surprised that Lilacpaw voiced concern for Newtpaw's status. Outside of the burns, she hadn't been having much trouble, save for the stresses of training underneath Lynxstar and knowing that she was responsible of taking up the mantle. What more, there was always the chance that she might inherit ThunderClan in the midst of a war. Of course, that would mean Briarlight passing away as well, but...war was war. Several unexpected and tragic events had happened already. There was always a chance that they'd get worse. "Just the stresses of my position, that's all. I'm fine."Something seemed different about Lilacpaw as well. She was always hanging around other cats, if Newtpaw recalled- sisters, perhaps? Either they had a disagreement that caused Lilacpaw to be by herself for the time being, or... ...Maybe it was best not to prod. If she wanted to talk about it, then she'd bring it forward on her own terms. "...Mmm yeah, I checked with him." Newtpaw dropped her pastel gaze to her paws, flexing them underneath the water and feeling relieved at the numbness that greeted her. "But you know how it is. Poppy seeds at night. Keep them clean. Not like I can't walk on my paws- my clan needs me." She gave a small shrug of her pale shoulders before glancing back up at the apprentice that chose to keep her company. "What about you? What gross herbs did Sagewhisker stuff down your throat?"simonwho

"I'm sure training under Lynxstar himself is stressful enough as it is, not to mention the fire and Shadowclan now." Lilacpaw replied, looking over. She would be lying if she said she didn't admire Newtpaw in a way. Popular among the clan, a socialite, and not to mention the leaders apprentice. All Lilacpaw was a lonely, normal apprentice. She wasn't envious of Newtpaw; quite the opposite, in fact. She was happy for the older apprentice.
With a nod, Lilacpaw forced out a quiet chuckle. "I didn't get injured badly enough to get anything too horrible. I just have to keep my burns clean." In all honestly, Lilacpaw couldn't remember going to Sagewhisker or even Whitepaw about her injuries. Then again, she was one of the lucky few to sustain such minor burns. "I'm sorry your paws got burned. I hope they heal soon."

She stared absent-mindedly at the gurgling water for some time, listening calmly to her fellow apprentice's words. It was stressful, she had to admit it. But did she expect any less when she accepted the challenge of training under perhaps what was the most intimidating cat in all of the forest? "...There are good days and bad." Newtpaw admitted, observing the minnows as they swirled around her paws, quietly wondering if they'd bite. Did fish even have teeth like a cat? Not wanting to take a chance, she used a forepaw to smack at the fish and make them scatter, wincing as the chilly water rose in the form of beads to lightly splatter against her mottled coat. "But I knew what I was getting into. I like responsibility and challenge- I welcome it, in fact. I enjoy learning from Lynxstar, I get to see first-paw how much he cares for his clan. Although..." She trailed off, recalling a bitter sensation of hatred and jealousy she felt towards a particular reckless hot-head. "...I can't say I like your mentor. I'm surprised she hasn't tried burning you to a crisp yet." Vixenleap was a distraction. She frequently stole away Lynxstar's attention to pitiful games of sparring, filled with disrespectful jabs at the leader's ego. Did he fancy her? How in the name of StarClan could he?! The pointed apprentice allowed her cerulean eyes to trail back towards Lilacpaw, speaking with genuine honesty. "I'm glad you were able to make it out of the fire without any tragic wounds. Some cats weren't all that lucky." The entirety of her legs were beginning to grow numb, causing Newtpaw to shift uncomfortably. "...I fear that I may need my paws to heal again as quickly as possible. I fear we might have a war on the horizon."simonwho

Lilacpaw gave a quiet laugh, though stopped at the mention of her mentor. Her eyes narrowed, ears flattening. To say she disliked Vixenleap was an understatement. Lilacpaw loathed the she-cat. Sure, she was her mentor, but the fiery warrior seemingly hated her for no reason. "My mentor has tried, I'm sure." Lilacpaw attempted to joke, though she lowered her head. She wasn't scared of Vixenleap. In fact, she couldn't care less about her.
She just wanted to get training over with and become a warrior. Her head rose as the other apprentice continued. "My sisters didn't make it out of the fire." She'd say, looking up at the sky with a sad smile. "I may have made it out without getting hurt too badly, but...we lost too many cats..."

Hm. She never would understand why Lynxstar enjoyed the presence of Vixenleap, given she was a loose canon and useless outside of picking fights and occasionally hunting. Newtpaw didn't bother to linger much on the subject long, anyways. Her hatred towards the red-furred warrior had been kept quiet for some time, and for the sake of maintaining peace within the clan, it was better that it remained that way. As the leader apprentice, she needed to be a role model. Openly expressing her spite towards a particular warrior wasn't a good message to send to the rest of the clan, especially to her fellow apprentices. Newtpaw's eyes softened when Lilacpaw admitted what she'd lost in the unexpected fires that scorched their land. "...I'm sorry to hear that they're no longer with us. I could always tell how much they meant to you." She spoke sincerely, recalling how the younger apprentice was seldom without the presence of her littermates, in or out of camp. The tortoiseshell point apprentice, on the other hand, never had littermates to call her own. Her dependency was entirely on the deputy's apprentice, with whom she was obviously smitten. She never knew the unconditional love of siblings. So, as the older cat present, it was Newtpaw's job to take the situation into her own hands. She tried to offer Lilacpaw a reassuring smile, slowly stepping out of the chilly water so as to prevent herself from splashing her company. "C'mon, let's head back to camp. We can try to catch something along the way and split it- the patrols caught enough prey for the elders and queens earlier."simonwho

Her ear twitched as the leader apprentice spoke, giving her a sad smile. "It's alright. I'm getting by. I'm sure I'll be fine in no time at all." Her voice held no confidence. It felt like she was constantly drowning in both loneliness and sadness. Losing both her sisters hurt a lot more than she'd ever let on. But she'd shake her head, taking a deep breath. Lilacpaw wasn't sure when - or how - she'd stop feeling like she did, but at that moment, she felt normal, in a sense, being able to talk to another cat about it. Perhaps she should actually try talking to others more often. At the mention of camp and a bite to eat, she'd nod and follow the older feline. She hadn't realized just how hungry she actually was, and was more than happy to hunt. "That sounds good. Oh, and thank you for talking to me, Newtpaw."
