The little ball of brown fur popped up. Brackenkit gave a little stretch, the ground frosting over in a very thin layer below his paws, and stood up. Around him, most of his siblings still seemed to be asleep. It was very early, after all. Brackenkit was up this early for a reason.
Taking a deep breath, Brackenkit focused on the ground. He focused his energy and virtually forced it to dig into the ground. Turn to ice! Turn to ice, already! He urged it. In response, the layer of ice below his paws began growing thicker, little by little. He found himself panting and puffing from exhaustion in no time, much to his annoyance. Why was he getting tired so fast?
Eventually, though, Brackenkit finally let go of his focus, staring at the small bit of ice that had grown into the ground. Frustration grew in him. Why was it so little? Any other cat could probably do much better than him...He hung his head, glaring at the patch of ice that was quickly melting already.
He seemed to forget that he was only a kit, and that his skills would improve as he grew up.
