She'd been stuck in denial for some time, confident that Owlpaw had merely been split from the clan during the blaze. For days she had masked her doubt, carrying herself in her typical confident and mature air as if he would one day return. Even after the announcement of his replacement for the deputy apprentice position, Newtpaw had stood strong. She hadn't accepted it. But it had been days now, and even some had admitted to witnessing him being lost and succumbing to the uncontrollable blaze. The leader apprentice had always been a vessel of flamboyancy that took up everything in stride, proving that she was deserving of her promotion and eager to take up future challenges head-on, no matter how difficult. But this...it had taken the wind out of her sails. At long last, the chocolate dappled adolescent had accepted the truth: Owlpaw, her cherished companion, her moon and stars, had been ripped away from her. And so ThunderClan had moved on, burying the sorrow of his death like they let everything else go, instead focusing on their ambitions against DarkClan and newfound loathing towards ShadowClan. But Newtpaw, she could not bury it. She had known and trained alongside the gray tom for countless moons, developing possessive behavior and what seemed like a dependency on his presence. She had felt as if they were an unstoppable duo, as if she'd be a worthy leader with Owlpaw there to help guide her during their long journey into powers. But now without him, she felt helpless. Newtpaw had no littermates- she had been a daddy's girl for as long as she could remember, until life had thrown her a curveball and her father perished under the cruel teeth of a fox. After that...Owlpaw had been her everything. Her best friend, her sense of calm, her rock, even her boyfriend. Sleep was hard to come by. Every moment she closed her eyes, she saw him- urging her to follow him into the forest to continue training, spending long nights with her beneath the stars...but recently, it had grown worse, turned into something twisted. She had spent long nights gripping her nest with her claws after awaking from nightmares, witnessing Owlpaw suffering in the fire and screaming out to her for name as he burned alive, with Newtpaw unable to reach him in time. It had been yet another one of those nights, one that had been the same as the last and the night before that, leaving Newtpaw without hope and the heavy sensation of loss. She had no energy to train, when she would normally greet Lynxstar at dawn, eager for their first lesson of the day. Life was no longer the same. Life felt as if it was without purpose.

Icy blue eyes opened once again. The young apprentice hadn't been asleep for too long; she'd only just closed her eyes before movement had awoken her. The she-cat hadn't been too terribly tired, though she'd blink sleep away as she looked around the den. Her gaze landed on the leader apprentice, Newtpaw. Lately, the fire element had noticed the older feline hadn't been the same. Not after Owlpaw had been announced as dead, killed from the fire that destroyed most of the territory. She could only assume that it had hit the leader apprentice hard; afterall, they were very, very close. Lilacpaw wasn't sure how to help, or if she even could. Perhaps it wasn't something she should ask about. But still, concern for her new...What should she call Newtpaw? A friend? She didn't know. Nevertheless, she yawned and pushed herself up, stretching briefly before sitting back down. "Newtpaw...?" She'd whisper, glancing at her denmates and hoping to Starclan she was quiet enough. "Are you alright?" She'd ask. It was a stupid question. It was obvious that the older feline wasn't, but she'd ask anyway. Sometimes cats didn't want to talk about it, sometimes they did. 20mia08

What kind of question was that? Was she alright? Had Lilacpaw been "alright" when all of her littermates, her entire family, had been consumed by the greedy blazes as well? But she had no right to snap at her fellow apprentice like that because it was evident that the she-cat was merely trying to help her, and at the moment, Lilacpaw was the closest friend she had. Driving her away with some sort of blindingly sarcastic comment would do neither of them any good. But to be honest, Newtpaw wasn't certain if she exactly wanted to discuss it- as social as she was, she had a reputation among the apprentices and even the entire clan that she had to uphold. Their future leader could not be seen as weak. Yet...that didn't mean it was wrong to feel, right? "...I feel broken. I feel like an empty void." It was all she could discern of her emotions since she had accepted Owlpaw's death with a heavy heart. The incessant nightmares of Owlpaw screeching her name as he was burned alive had twisted her stomach nightly, but in the end, she always felt the same: hopelessly alone. It was not the same, waking up only to find the tom missing, heading out at dawn to practice only to find that he had been replaced as her future political partner. It disgusted her. It hurt her that ThunderClan so absent-mindedly moved on following his disappearance. Did everything have to be strictly business? simonwho

"I....I see." Lilacpaw replied, closing her mouth and looking around. She felt the same when she had heard her sisters had died, but had slowly began to heal. "It...It's so painful to lose someone so close. Someone you care for; love, even." She said, looking down at her paws. She had felt so alone and so helpless. But right now, her own problems could wait. Newtpaw was more important than Lilacpaw could ever be. "I'm so sorry that Owlpaw is gone, Newtpaw. I...I wish I could give my life for his. He didn't deserve to go like...Like that." The fire element spoke as quietly as she could, moving to sit beside the older feline. "I'm here for you, okay? Whatever you need." The apprentice assured the older cat, though didn't move her gaze from her paws. "I think it was wrong that we didn't even mourn Owlpaw. He would have been a great deputy." 20mia08

As Lilacpaw offered her sympathies, Newtpaw's mind drifted back to the good old days of youth and innocence, when death seemed like some sort of inconceivable thing. It used to feel like nothing more than a scary ghost story that the elders would tell to kits in order to put them to bed early, and keep them there. But now the chocolate tortoiseshell faced it as a reality, a bitter, cruel reality. Despite the war efforts ThunderClan had participated in while she served under Lynxstar's tutorship, death wasn't exactly something she faced every day. She thought she'd be numb to it, but the horrible reality of it was... "...Thank you for your sympathies." It was all the leader apprentice could manage to rasp, speaking in a whisper that gave away the true level of exhaustion she felt. Her mournfulness felt like a burden, a heavy weight that made her shoulders sink to the earth. But she was grateful that Lilacpaw was attempting to help her through her sorrows, an emotional journey that, unfortunately, the lynx point feline had already been through with the loss of her own sisters. "I know losing your sisters had to be much more painful, I feel like a fool for mourning over him in your presence, considering what you must've gone through."The emotional despair continued to crush Newtpaw, until she finally leaned against Lilacpaw for both emotional and physical support. She felt so weak, so helpless...like Lynxstar would punish her for being in such a state. But the mention of ThunderClan failing to mourn for Owlpaw- it made Newtpaw sinks her claws into her nest out of resentment. "...He deserved a proper vigil. They all did."simonwho
