notes
He wanted to talk to her more than anyone else.
If anyone would understand his predicament, surely it would be Ravenstar, an individual he admired, someone true of heart and honest as they came. However, of all things- would she even accept him as a leader?
...or even as a friend?
No, it didn't matter. Currently, her advice was more important than anything else, as this situation was a sticky one. Regardless, he had made a promise to Primrose, and he wasn't one for breaking them. How he'd deal with the situation...well, that was a completely different problem. She endangered WindClan and the other four clans- heck, she was a hazard to herself, but he was set on preventing another cat from dying from consumption. He'd suffered through that hell once, and he didn't plan on going through it again.
Why was being a leader so stressful?
Not only did he have to worry about keeping WindClan safe from Primrose and keeping the molly safe from herself, but RiverClan was a nagging threat, like a biting flies on a hot greenleaf day. He could feel the tensions rising in the tips of his whiskers, and he knew in the pit of his heart that war was on the horizon. Stormstar was a young leader, inexperienced due to his short term as deputy, and he was far from an aggressive cat. However, if the threat was brought into his land...he wouldn't hesitate to act. Peace was always an option he preferred, especially because fighting made him anxious. It brought the demons from his past back from their depths.
The WindClan smoke began to pace along the outskirts of the five stones, tail twitching in frustration as fear nipped at his stomach. He could only hope and pray that if anyone showed up- it'd be Ravenstar. He was curious of how things turned out with ThunderClan, and for whatever reason...
...why did he care so much? Why did he feel so paranoid for her?
Whatever. Either way, he was praying day-in-and-day-out to StarClan that she was just ok.

||Didn’t feel like grabbing my template|| Ravenstar would be lying if she said she wasn’t looking forward to seeing Stormchaser again. She wanted someone to talk to again without worry. Of course she could talk to her Clanmates, but none of their conversations felt the same. They didn’t feel as satisfying as they did with Stormchaser. Why was it like that? Maybe it was the whole mood in the Clan. Everything had felt off since the battle. They didn’t lose, but they didn’t necessarily win. Their Clanmates were still missing. Some cats were badly injured. Lilacbreeze died. Ravenstar couldn’t help but think that it was her fault. She should have never let the aging warrior go on the patrol with her. Ravenstar knew she was getting weaker and weaker as the moons passed. She was one of the first cats Ravenstar lost under her leadership. Ravenstar wanted to take her mind off of the whole situation. She thought back to her first meeting with Stormchaser and remembered the promise they had made. Maybe looking for some things to bring to Five Stones would help. There was no guarantee that he’d even be there, but it was worth a shot. There wasn’t much flora in DarkClan to begin with. Mainly just grasses, the pine trees to the south, moss and the occasional flowers. She decided to to a bundle of grass and pine branches since the flowers had not begun to bloom yet. After collecting a sufficient amount of things she believed represented her territory well, Ravenstar made her way to Five Stones. If Stormchaser wasn’t there, she’d leave it by DarkClan’s pillar as a sort of ‘memorial’ for her missing warriors. That would be a good enough excuse if anyone asked. She crossed the stepping stones to the island and she couldn’t help but smile. ”Stormchaser!” She purred, though it was muffled by the bundle in her mouth. She couldn’t hide her excitement to see him again. Why was she so happy to see the WindClan tom again? Perhaps that was a question for another day. 20mia08

Stormstar
notes
His mind was always active, constantly running and plaguing his happy, sunny days with worries. Reuniting with Ravenstar and having a pleasant conversation was something he should be excited about, but instead, he was horribly stressed. Stressed about how his Clan viewed him, stressed about his relations with RiverClan, stressed about Primrose being a walking feline-bomb, stressed about how Ravenstar might be fairing...
The smoke leader stopped dead in his tracks when he barely heard the muffled voice of the DarkClan she-cat, picking up his head and pricking his ears like an alert ungulate. "Stormchaser"...it as a name he missed, admittedly. Stormstar sounded cool and all, and it represented his position as leader, but he had always been so proud of the warrior name he worked tirelessly for. He loved it, ever since the day he received it. For a moment, he considered dropping everything- forgetting about informing her of his promotion and situations back at home.
But when he saw the flowers in her jaws, his mouth hung open and his dilated eyes grew round. She...remembered? And he forgot?! Oh StarClan, have pity on his soul for being such a selfish fool and forgetting! He had been so giddy about it as well, he even spent an entire afternoon scouring his territory for the most perfect specimens. Not like it was unusual, the entire hoard of WindClan warriors were aware of his fascination and tendency to...well, be himself: a scatterbrained oddball.
"...R-Ravenstar!" He fought to find the words- those flowers complimented her eyes very well. Why did he care, and why did he even notice that? Was he jealous that she was better at picking flowers than he was? Her purr made warmth spread throughout his chest, and the feeling of pressure was immediately lifted from his shoulders. He took a few steps forward, unable to hold back a purr before guilt drove it away. How could he have forgotten? "...You remembered!"
With his shoulders sagging, he averted his gaze to the dirt at his paws. "...And I forgot, like a total hare-brain..."

Only time will tell if we’re all just cynics on the run #### Ravenstar smiled softly and put down her bundle. She looked at the tom, who was cleary upset that he had forgotten. She was familiar with the insult he used on himself, hearing it from her WindClan refugees at times. She felt bad. Ravenstar searched for the right words to try and comfort him. "It's alright, Stormchaser. If I'm being honest, I only grabbed them on a whim today. I didn't expect to see you here again so soon." She meowed.
That didn't feel like the right words. Why was she overthinking what to say? She never overthought anything. Great StarClan her thoughts were all over the place and she didn't understand why.
Ravenstar decided to push away that train for now, hoping to get a level-head again. Normal conversation would work, right? She hoped. "How have you been? I hope Heatherstar managed to calm things down with RiverClan. I'm not sure why they'd be so interested in Hare Plains, was it? They've got the rivers and a pawful of fire elementals. I'm sure they can still fish in Leafbare." She meowed, flicking her tail. "Besides, newleaf is coming. If she hasn't managed to sort things out, the ice should start melting soon. Maybe they'll realize fish is easier to catch than hares."
Oh, how oblivious she was. If we’re all just cynics come undone

Stormstar
notes
The black smoke tom felt his tail droop when she mentioned grabbing the flowers on a whim, and for whatever reason, negative thoughts began to pelt his mind again. This time, not so much about his clan and his own problems, but something about Ravenstar mentioning the flowers. Had she been hoping to see him or...someone else? He tried to shake the thought away, but it continued to pester and nag at him like a thorn in his pawpad. What did he care if she had other friends, anyways? He had other friends, too...well, sorta. He counted Snakepad as a friend. He was his deputy, so they had to work well together. "Oh!" It was all he could manage to think of at the moment.
As she continued on, her words made Stormstar wish that he could melt into a little, pitiful puddle. Just disappear from the world and his responsibilities. Not only did the concern of Ravenstar visiting someone else proceed to badger him, but now, she reminded him of his plethora of other problems. Honestly, small wave of anger bubbled up in the pit of his stomach, but he forced the feeling to subside when he reminded himself that she was unconscious of WindClan's problems. He was yet to attend his first Gathering as leader, meaning that everyone was yet to be updated on WindClan's predicaments.
"Uhm, well..." Once more, the smoke leader's eyes darted to his paws, allowing them to shuffle in the dirt as a distraction. How would he word all of this? Could she handle all of this new information at once? Most likely. If a cat as feeble as himself could process it all, he was confident that an individual as strong and confident as Ravenstar could absorb it all with little to no problem. "Heatherstar kind of...died."
He stopped playing with the dust and instead stared at the ground in silence for several heartbeats. He missed his leader, everything just made so much sense under her guidance, and everything always worked out in the end. What was he thinking? He could never live up to her name. "...and so did our deputy, before Heatherstar's passing. O-Our wolf problem has gotten out of control...and so has our relations with RiverClan. Our times of peace are behind us now."

Only time will tell if we’re all just cynics on the run #### Ravenstar could tell by Stormstar's body language that something about what she said with the flowers put him off. She looked away awkwardly. Her ears felt hot with embarrasment. What did she say that was wrong? Did saying it was on a whim make him think she wasn't thinking about him? Why would she be thinking about him? Why wouldn't she be? Great StarClan pull yourself together Ravenstar! Why are you like this? She thought, flexing her claws into the ground.
Stormstar saying Heatherstar was dead pulled her out of her messy thoughts. "She...what?" Ravenstar took a moment to process it. Heatherstar was young and healthy. She shouldn't have died so early in her leadership. What could possibly have happened to her?
Then when he mentioned the deputy died, Ravenstar could only think of the state of anarchy WindClan was in when it all went down. Was it still like that? Did Heatherstar have time to appoint a new deputy before she died? Who would she appoint? Would she ask? Maybe it was best to just wait until the next Gathering. If she knew in advance, the other leaders would become suspicious.
Suspicious of what? What were these meetings to her? Why did it bother her if questions were asked?
When he spoke of the wolves, Ravenstar thought for a moment. She thought back to things she heard her WindClan refugees speak of. Tunnels! Old WindClan used to tunnel back before they lived in the valley. Elders would pass on the stories of the tunnelers so their warriors wouldn't be forgotten. She remembered hearing apprentices gossip about their cultures among themselves. Maybe that would be a temporary solution?
"I'm no WindClan warrior, but I could give my advice on this whole endevor." She offered. "I remember hearing something about old WindClan having tunnels in the former territories? Maybe doing that would help get around the territory safely until the wolves are dealt with? You could suggest that to your leader if you'd like. I-It's just an idea." She shuffled her paws awkardly. If we’re all just cynics come undone

He was thankful that she was willing to offer her advice without him specifically asking for it. That was what real friends did- they helped each other out without a second of hesitation. A handful of cats he knew didn't take well to criticism, but he always welcomed it with open arms. True, it hurt the sensitive tom from time to time, but in the end, things always had a way of working out.
DarkClan was shady in the eyes of other clans, like a group of slippery snakes that couldn't be trusted. For a while, he almost believed that statement, until he met Ravenstar. He didn't understand why ThunerClan had been so bent on casting her out, she was really a brilliant individual. Not to mention, she was also thoughtful. He respected that about her, admired it even. He had met his fair share of generous and kind-hearted felines in his lifetime, but none of them made an impression on him like her.
He took their level of friendship into mind, and concluded that he couldn't hide any secrets from her. If she was so willing to be honest with him, then he'd had to reciprocate that. Stormstar kept his eyes on his paws, before he at last mustered up the courage to anxiously glance up at Ravenstar as she desperately attempted to lend him a paw, oblivious to his new magnitude of power within WindClan.
For her, he could make them see, see DarkClan for the cats they were.
For the cat that she was.
"Ravenstar..." He trailed off, once again fighting with his insecure self to win the right to admit everything to her. He could walk away now and leave, leave because his fear of the truth made him quake like a frightened kitten. Would this change their relationship forever? Would she see him the same after this, or would ancient rules and traditions force her to acknowledge him for who he was, and end their little conversations that made him feel so much more comfortable in his skin?
His heart would pounding, so hard. "...I have to tell you the truth. I-I can't hide it from you- you're my greatest friend, honestly."
No more secrets.

Only time will tell if we’re all just cynics on the run #### Ravenstar looked into his eyes as he spoke her name. Then suddenly he went silent. She sat down and wrapped her tail around her paws, allowing him time to figure out what he wanted to say. On the outside, she held a cool demeanor, but on the inside she was panicking. The tone, the way he spoke her name, it worried her.
Was she overthinking this again? Why did she analyze it so much? Why was she thinking about all of this again? Her thoughts were flying around in a sheer panic like a bat in the sunlight.
The truth? What truth was there to tell? What was he hiding from her that he thought was so urgent he needed to tell her? She understood the two keeping secrets about their Clans, that was reasonable Clan politics. But something was so important he needed to tell her. Was it about their friendship? Did cats find out and he didn't want to risk something?
She was his greatest friend.
Her heart melted. Did he truly think so? Or was he saying that to try and distract her from whatever truth he hid. There was only one way to find out.
"I'm listening." If we’re all just cynics come undone

Stormstar
notes
He had arrived hoping that Ravenstar could offer him advice and comfort, to put his mind at ease. But now, he was struggling more than ever, and it made him feel like an inexperienced apprentice heading out on his first hunt. It would be a test of their faith and friendship. He had so many things to throw at her, and this entire time...he was thinking about himself. Of what he could do, and not how if would make her feel.
Stormstar was afraid that she would leave him, and thinking back on it, even that was selfish of him. What mattered more was her feelings on the matter, and if she chose to break their friendly talks off, then so be it. He deserved it. He had a choice to pick between her and his clan when Heatherstar selected him as deputy, and he foolishly took up the offer of a silly title.
Her loyalty meant more than anything else to him, and he picked a title.
And now, he think he'd choose his closest friend over all the glory in the world.
Why hadn't StarClan given them the power to go back in time? "Ravenstar, I-I'm the new leader of WindClan." He had practically choked on the words, and he heard his own voice crack when he attempted to deliver the news. Before he left WindClan to visit her, he had played the scene over in his head hundreds of times, and he always sounded so cool when he said it. But now, he sounded like an awkward adolescent trying to fess up to their crush.
...was that what she was to him?
No, preposterous! Stormstar had never felt attraction before, and Ravenstar was his friend. That was all they could be, anyways. There was so many barriers in their world that would prevent them from joining together, from their positions as leaders to their elements that forced them to be separate forever. All he was doing was making his first and most trusted friend outside of the brother he had lost so many moons ago.
His brother would be proud of him, right?
...could he go through losing another cat so special to him? Was StarClan's great plan for him to live independently for the rest of his life, while driving away any and all meaningful bonds he made? Could the world possibly be so cruel to him?
In the midst of all his troublesome thoughts, he never noticed that he was quivering so hard, shaking like a leaf in the wind, as if he was going to freeze to death. The pressure that her warm greeting had immediately lifted had returned, and it fell upon him like an avalanche.

Only time will tell if we’re all just cynics on the run #### Ravenstar did not expect that. He was the new leader of WindClan? Well that complicates things. Why would it complicate simple talks? Or were they something more to her? Were they something more to him?
She looked at him. He was shaking. The change must have been sudden. He must have just become deputy when Heatherstar was suddenly killed. She knew how it felt going into leadership without any experience prior as a deputy. The constant fear of letting your Clan down wasn't something that was easy to shake. Especially when they had no where else to go. When she promised sanctuary to all Dark Elementals if they wanted it, she didn't expect so many cats to look up to her like that. It was an overwhelming change, especially trying to found a Clan in leafbare. A few cats starved to death under her leadership. It was something she never forgave herself for.
With wolves on the loose in WindClan, Stormstar must be feeling the same way she did moons ago. Just how many cats has WindClan lost to them? Stormstar needed her reassurance now more than ever.
Ravenstar rose to her paws and sat down next to him, placing her tail on his back in hopes to comfort him. He was shaking more than a kit learning to walk for the first time. "A title doesn't change anything. You're still the same cat you were when I met you, Stormstar." She meowed. Stormstar. It felt nice to say it out loud. "Our little talks don't have to end because of a tragedy. I'll always be here."
It meant a lot for her to say that. He meant a lot to her unknowingly and she couldn't understand why. If we’re all just cynics come undone

Stormstar
notes
The WindClan leader was so absorbed in his terrifying thoughts that he hadn't noticed her approach, and flinched at her touch. He felt the muscles in his form tense at first, until finally they relaxed when he realized that she was beside him. They had never been so close before, in fact, he hadn't been this close to a cat in moons. It felt...odd to him, but at the same time, he had never felt so safe and secure. For a brief moment, with Ravenstar at his side underneath the glittering stars, he felt a feeling so alien to him.
It was there and gone so fast that he was unable to comprehend it.
Stormstar was truly thankful that she was willing to stick by his side through it all, especially when all cats he had known personally had left him in the end. He could only pray to StarClan that this relationship he had with her would last, and that not even war and bloodshed could tear them apart. Did she really mean it?
If she did, then it was the same for him: until the end of time, Stormstar would be there for her.
In rain or shine, in life or death, he would stand proudly by her side.
However, everything was far form over. She knew briefly about WindClan's problems, the wolves and relations with RiverClan, but there was something that only he knew about. A potential threat to them all: their first ever stranger. Stormstar believed that she was a dark element, and deep down, he hoped that Ravenstar wouldn't take her in so soon. He wanted to help Primrose, especially since he made her a promise that he didn't intend on breaking anytime soon. Consumption had taken his brother, and he wouldn't let it take another.
But he had promised himself that he would hide nothing else from Ravenstar. And if she deemed it reasonable for her to take in Primrose, even if she was a walking explosive...then so be it. "There's something else." Finally, after enjoying that moment with Ravenstar by his side, he spoke again.
"...Ravenstar, I have found a stranger. She's not from here, a-and I've taken her in. She's suffering from consumption, and I don't want her to die...I don't want to lose another one." His stomach twisted. Never, he had never told a soul about his backstory. Not a soul knew about his brother's agonizing death, nor did anybody know about the torment he faced from his parents.
Ravenstar sure was special.

Only time will tell if we’re all just cynics on the run #### Ravenstar's eyes widened in fascination as Stormstar spoke of a stranger. If he were any other outsider to DarkClan she wouldn't believe him for a second. But she trusted him, probably with her life at this point. If there were strangers that found their way into the valley, would StarClan give them the gift of the elements to them too? If they have vile intentions, would war break out? She pushed away the thought. It was just one stranger. Surely they were harmless.
But they were suffering from Consumption. Ravenstar knew all too well what that felt like. The constant burning feeling when the darkness began to swallow her whole. The violent thoughts that flooded her mind constantly. The inability to control your element causing you to harm those around you. The stranger was a dry forest in a lightning storm. Something bad happening was inevitable.
"Do you know what element she has? Finding a mentor for her is crucial." She meowed. Stormstar mentioned losing someone to consumption. Losing someone to consumption is never easy. She seen it first hand in ShadowClan. She wouldn't press him for details on his experience. She'd try to figure out how the stranger had an element later. If we’re all just cynics come undone

Stormstar
notes
Stormstar never put much thought into it, really. He had impulsively agreed to take Primrose in after understanding her situation and reflecting upon his own experiences with the horrible fate. After getting her name and a little information on her, he had accepted despite the devastation she might bring to the forest. But what about her backstory? Speaking with Ravenstar offered him an ounce of confidence, especially since he valued her advice like none other, yet...it also made him think.
And sometimes, his ceaseless thinking only made him feel worse.
Primrose could have been from anywhere, and her father, as she had said, had come from the valley. Therefore, he could have been from any of the clans. Her siblings had passed away from the same affliction, meaning her father hadn't attempted to train them. She never mentioned if he was still alive or not, but Stormstar assumed that he had some degree of control over his powers. So, then...why did he leave the valley? Why didn't he attempt to train his offspring?
"I think she's a dark element." Stormstar finally confessed, feeling his stomach twist. He was worried that Ravenstar might suggest that she take Primrose into DarkClan instead of WindClan, but for whatever reason, he didn't want that to happen. No, he wasn't a dark element, nor was he certain if he had many dark element remaining within his borders. "...But I want to help her. I know that Star Root can help her get things under control for some time. Dangerous or not, I made her a promise, and I'm not going to break it."
Wow, he was never really...that objective, or confident. It felt good, but also exhausting.
"Her father, she mentioned that he came from this valley. Do you...know anybody that fled the clans, particularly someone who might have been a dark element?" He didn't want to prod, but Stormstar was agonizingly curious at the moment. He wanted to investigate the issue, and find out what was really going on beyond their borders. Something didn't feel right, and while he didn't want to go pointing fingers...he knew that DarkClan's deputy was missing. Could that have been the cat? Or was Primrose's father a cat attempting to escape inevitable war?

Only time will tell if we’re all just cynics on the run #### Ravenstar's ears twitched when he said that Primrose was likely a dark element. Suffering from consumption this dangerous would make sense that she's a Dark elemental. WindClan as a whole is at risk with her there untrained. Star Root will only delay the inveitable. I can't imagine the pain she's going through. She thought. Stormstar insisted that he had to be the one to help her. Ravenstar wasn't sure what made him feel so strongly about this, but she'd respect it.
"If you feel the need to be the one to help her, you can. Know that you'll have an ally in DarkClan for this situation. If you ever need help from one of us with her training, I'll gladly lend a warrior." She meowed, keeping a level tone. She felt Primrose would be in better paws in DarkClan, but she wouldn't undermine Stormstar.
"I know a lot of cats who've fled the valley because of their element." She chuckled. Many dark elementals had fled the valley for generations until DarkClan was founded. It would be tough to narrow it down as to who. Ravenstar thought carefully to those who left somewhat recently. If Primrose was suffering from consumption, it was likely that she was the age of an older apprentice. Why would her father refuse to train her? Her mother was likely a loner or rogue, so she'd have no ability to train her. Maybe he died? Or perhaps he had a vendetta?
Primrose would have no knowledge of the valley if he hadn't told her. He must have told her something that would send her here. If she was so unstable, perhaps he had an alterior motive to sending her? Who would want that? Who would want to prove those who discriminated right? A name flashed into her mind.
"I...I'm not sure who it could have been." She lied. "A lot of cats have left hoping to find a better life. I can't think of one in particular who would raise their kits like that." If we’re all just cynics come undone

Stormstar
notes
If worse came to worse, he knew that he'd have no other choice but to turn Primrose over to DarkClan, in hopes that Ravenstar could save her. But for whatever reason, he felt so responsible for her, like it was his duty to save her. Why was he being so selfish? You can do this, Stormstar. He tried to offer himself reassurance to back up his actions. Many cats mentor others who aren't the same element. How could this be any different from an Air element mentoring a Fire? Control is control.
Knowing that he had Ravenstar and DarkClan to back him up made Stormstar feel more comfortable, but the idea of ThunderClan still crawled underneath his skin. Hiding a dark element suffering from consumption that was an outsider, and then having DarkClan back them up in the cause...Lynxstar would crush him with a single motion of his paw. But who said he has to know? As long as Primrose stayed clear of them, everything would be ok.
And hopefully, cats would keep their mouths shut.
"Thank you, Ravenstar." The black smoke dipped his head in respect before glancing up at her bashfully, like an apprentice looking up to a brave warrior they so deeply admired. "Your kindness means the world to me. And I promise that if things start to get too overwhelming...I will come to you for aid. I understand that you prefer to take in all dark elements under your wing. I don't mean to keep her from you, it's just...I feel responsible for her."
That, and he didn't want Ravenstar to be torn to bits. He didn't understand why he felt so passionately about keeping the dark-coated feline from harm, he just did.
However, something was still nagging at him. Ravenstar wouldn't keep secrets from him, right? As much as he had grown to respect the clan, it always felt like they had their own demons that they refused to share. It was understandable, with such strong feelings of hatred stemming from some clans. DarkClan always had a target on their back, and it was Ravenstar's duty to keep them safe. "I'm sure, eventually, Primrose might be able to reveal who he is. I can only hope his intentions will be...peaceful."
